چند نصیحتیں Chand Naseehatein (A Few Bits of Advice)

भावार्थ: हर कठिन मंज़िल को पार कर लेना कुछ मुश्किल नहीं - इंसान में बस चलते रहने की थोड़ी सी हिम्मत चाहिए। कमज़ोर-दिल, नुक्ता-चीं लोगों को दुनिया में कभी मुराद नहीं मिलती - अगर कामयाबी चाहिए तो मेहनत चाहिए। और मेहनत भी ख़ाक (बेकार) हो जाती है जब हाथों में ताक़त न हो - इसलिए तन दुरुस्त रखने के लिए वरज़िश (कसरत) की आदत भी चाहिए।

Meaning: crossing every difficult stage of the road is not hard at all - a person just needs a little courage to keep walking. The faint-hearted, fault-finding never get what they wish for in this world - if you want success, you need hard work. And hard work itself turns to dust when there is no strength in the hands - so for a fit body, one also needs the habit of exercise.

भावार्थ: दुनिया में ख़ुश-मिज़ाजी जैसा कोई जादू नहीं - ऐसी तबीयत चाहिए कि हर कोई तारीफ़ करे। हँसकर मिलना हर इंसान को राम (नरम) कर लेता है - इसलिए तुम्हें सबसे मीठा बोलने की आदत चाहिए। छोटे-बड़े सब एक ही अल्लाह के बंदे हैं - इसलिए अपने जैसे इंसानों से दुनिया में मुहब्बत चाहिए। काम को कल पर छोड़ना भी एक बुराई जैसी बुराई है - आज ही उठकर सब काम से फ़ुर्सत पा लेनी चाहिए। जो बुरे लोगों के पास बैठेगा, वह ख़ुद भी बुरा हो जाएगा - नेक बनने के लिए नेक लोगों की सोहबत (साथ) चाहिए।

Meaning: there is no magic in the world like good cheer - one needs such a temperament that everyone praises it. Meeting people with a smile wins over every person - so you need the habit of speaking sweetly to everyone. Small or great, all are servants of the same one God - so one needs love for one's fellow beings in this world. Putting off work until tomorrow is itself a bad habit - one should get up and finish everything today. Whoever sits with bad people will become bad himself - to become good, one needs the company of good people.

भावार्थ: ध्यान रहे कि साथ वाले तुमसे आगे न निकल जाएँ - इसलिए ऐसा जोश और ऐसी हमियत (ग़ैरत/लगन) चाहिए। हुक्मराँ हो या कोई और, अपना हो या पराया, जिसे ख़ुदा ने इज़्ज़त दी है उसकी इज़्ज़त करनी चाहिए। रास्ते में देख-भाल कर चलो कि कोई चींटी भी न कुचली जाए - इंसान को बे-ज़बान जानवरों से भी उल्फ़त (प्यार) चाहिए। अगर कोई इज़्ज़त का भेद समझे तो वह यही है कि छोटे बच्चों को बुज़ुर्गों की इताअत (आज्ञा-पालन) चाहिए। जिसे सबसे बड़ी दौलत इल्म कहा जाता है, अगर दुनिया में इज़्ज़त चाहिए तो उसी को ढूँढ लो। लड़ना एक बुरी आदत है जिसे सब बुरा कहते हैं - साथ के लड़कों से रफ़ाक़त (दोस्ती) चाहिए, लड़ाई नहीं। अगर जमाअत (साथियों के समूह) में शरारत करने वाले भी हों, तो उनसे बस दूर रहकर सलाम-दुआ (सिर्फ़ रस्मी सलामी) ही काफ़ी है।

Meaning: take care that your companions do not get ahead of you - so one needs such zeal and such spirit. Whether a ruler or anyone else, one's own or a stranger, whoever God has given honour to should be honoured. Walk carefully so that not even an ant is crushed on the path - a person should feel affection even for voiceless creatures. If anyone understands the true secret of respect, it is this: small children should obey their elders. What is called the greatest wealth of all is knowledge - seek that out if you want honour in this world. Fighting is a bad habit that everyone condemns - one needs friendship with the boys around one, not quarrels. And if there are mischief-makers in one's group too, it is enough simply to keep one's distance from them with a polite greeting.

भावार्थ: कभी अपने बाप-दादा की बड़ाई पर मत इतराओ - सारी भलाई अपनी मेहनत की बदौलत ही चाहिए (यानी अपनी ही मेहनत से हासिल करनी चाहिए)। अगर चाहते हो कि सब छोटे-बड़े तुम्हारी इज़्ज़त करें, तो आँखों में शर्म और निगाहों में मुरव्वत (नरमी/लिहाज़) चाहिए। क्या ऊँची ज़ात की बात में भी इतराने जैसी कोई बात है? इंसान को तो अपने ही कामों की शराफ़त (भलमनसाहत) चाहिए। अगर किताबें मैली हो जाएँ तो पढ़ने का क्या मज़ा रहेगा - काम की चीज़ों की हिफ़ाज़त (देख-भाल) ज़रूरी चाहिए।

Meaning: never take pride in the greatness of your ancestors - all goodness should come by your own effort. If you want everyone, young and old, to respect you, you need modesty in your eyes and gentleness in your gaze. Is there really anything to be proud of in belonging to a high caste? A person needs the decency of his own good deeds instead. If books become soiled, what pleasure is left in reading them - useful things need to be looked after and protected.
