About the author

This nazm is by Akbar Allahabadi (1846-1921), born Akbar Hussain Rizvi in Bara Banki and later settled in Allahabad. He is a celebrated Urdu satirist known for his light, witty verse poking fun at the clash between old customs and new (English-influenced) fashions. 'Aamon ki Farmaish' is a short, mischievous nazm in which the poet asks a friend to skip any letter or message and simply send mangoes instead.

Summary

Meaning: the poet says - let my friend send no letter or message at all; whatever he sends this season, let him just send mangoes.

Meaning: let the mangoes be such that they can be kept and eaten; and if fully ripe ones aren't available, let him send at least ten raw/unripe ones instead.

Meaning: the poet says - you already know my address, so just send them straight to Allahabad in my name.

Meaning: only let it not happen that you write back saying 'it will be done, but send the payment first' - this is the poet's playful, teasing punchline.
