About the author
This nazm is by Shafiqud Din Nayyar. It is a descriptive nazm in which the poet expresses love for his homeland by describing its natural beauty - birds, rivers, mountains, gardens and lush green fields. It is the first chapter of the NCERT 'Apni Zaban' (Class 7) textbook.
Summary
भावार्थ: यह मेरा वतन है, यह मेरा वतन। यहाँ चिड़िया, तोता, मैना, मोर, कोयल, बुलबुल, क़ुमरी और चकोर जैसे परिंदे हैं। यहाँ झीलों की लहरें हैं, दरिया का ज़ोर है, झरनों का गिरना और पानी का शोर है, और इसके सरसब्ज़ (हरे-भरे) पहाड़ और जंगल हैं।
Meaning: this is my homeland, this is my homeland. Here are birds such as the sparrow, the parrot, the myna, the peacock, the cuckoo, the nightingale, the dove and the partridge. Here are the waves of the lakes, the force of the river, the falling of waterfalls and the sound of water, and its lush green mountains and forests.
भावार्थ: यहाँ अनाज, मेवे और तरकारियाँ (सब्ज़ियाँ) हैं। यहाँ ख़ुशरंग फूलों की गुलकारियाँ (फूलों की सजावट) हैं, हरे-भरे बाग़ों की फुलवारियाँ हैं, पानी से भरी और ख़ुशनुमा क्यारियाँ हैं। यहाँ की ज़मीनें ज़रख़ेज़ (उपजाऊ) और दिलकश (मनमोहक) चमन (बाग़) हैं।
Meaning: here are crops, fruits and vegetables. Here are colourful flower beds, the flower gardens of lush orchards, well-watered and pleasing flower beds. Its lands are fertile and its meadows charming.
भावार्थ: पहाड़ों का नज़ारा जंगलों का साज़ो-सामान है, इनमें हज़ारों बहते हुए चश्मे हैं। इसकी ख़ूबियाँ कहाँ तक बयान करूँ - इस चमन (बाग़) को देखकर फ़िरदौस (जन्नत) का गुमान होता है। यह बाग़ इरम है, यह बाग़ अदन है - यह मेरा वतन है, यह मेरा वतन।
Meaning: the sight of the mountains is the splendour of the forests, in them flow thousands of springs. How far can I describe its virtues - looking at this meadow, one imagines it to be paradise itself. This is the Garden of Iram, this is the Garden of Eden - this is my homeland, this is my homeland.
