ہماری تاریخ Hamari Tareekh (Our History)

भावार्थ: चाहे कोई भी घर हो, दीवाली के दिये हर जगह जलते थे। ईद फिर से सीनों (दिलों) में तरह-तरह के उजाले भर देती थी। होली का रंग हर एक दिल में बिखर जाता था, और चेहरे-चेहरे पर तरह-तरह के लाले (सुर्ख़ फूल जैसी रौनक़) दमकते थे।

Meaning: no matter whose home it was, the lamps of Diwali were lit everywhere. Eid, in turn, filled hearts with all kinds of light. The colour of Holi scattered into every heart, and on every face glowed a flush like the red tulip flower.

भावार्थ: ऐ वतन! जो हाथ (यानी अजनबी, विदेशी हाथ) तेरी तारीख़ लिख रहे थे, उसे सोची-समझी हिकमत (चाल) के सिवा और क्या नाम दें? उन्होंने हमारे हर प्यार को नफ़रत में बदलना चाहा - इसे चालाक सियासत (राजनीति) के सिवा और क्या पुकारें?

Meaning: O homeland! What can we call the history that scheming (foreign) hands wrote for you, except a deliberately planned trick? They wanted to turn all our love into hatred - what can we call that except clever, divisive politics?

भावार्थ: ऐ वतन! हम तेरी तारीख़ को फिर से (नए सिरे से) लिखेंगे। तेरी असली तारीख़ तो दिलजोई (दिल जीतने) और दिलदारी की है। तेरी तारीख़ मुहब्बत की, वफ़ा की तारीख़ है - तेरी तारीख़ भाईचारे (उख़ुव्वत) की और रवादारी (सहनशीलता) की है।

Meaning: O homeland! We will write your history again, afresh. Your true history is one of consoling and cherishing hearts. Your history is one of love, a history of faithfulness - your history is one of brotherhood and tolerance.

भावार्थ: तेरी तारीख़ क़ुरआन का और गीता का एक वरक़ (पन्ना) है - सुलह (आश्ती), अमन और अहिंसा के उसूलों का सबक़ है। दुनिया में आज तक तेरे मुक़ाबले की कोई क़ौम खड़ी नहीं हुई - न कोई ऐसी क़ौम, न कोई चिश्ती (सूफ़ी संत) जैसा, न कोई नानक (गुरु नानक) जैसा उठा।

Meaning: your history is a page of the Quran and of the Gita - a lesson in the principles of reconciliation, peace and non-violence (ahimsa). No nation in the world has yet risen to match you - no such nation, no such Chishti, no such Nanak has arisen.

भावार्थ: आज हम आज़ाद हैं, हमारा ज़हन (मन) भी आज़ाद है। हम तंग (संकीर्ण) जज़्बातों के घेरों से निकल आए हैं। जो बीज अंग्रेज़ों (फ़रंगी) की सियासत ने कभी बोए थे, उन तअस्सुब (पूर्वाग्रह) के अंधेरों से भी हम निकल आए हैं।

Meaning: today we are free, and our minds too are free. We have come out of the narrow circles of confined feelings. We have also come out of the darkness of prejudice that the politics of the British (farangi) had once sown.

भावार्थ: हमारा वतन एक है, हमारी ज़मीन एक है, हम एक हैं। हमारी सोच (फ़िक्र) और अमल (काम) एक हैं, हमारा यक़ीन (विश्वास) एक है, हम एक हैं। कौन कहता है कि हम एक नहीं हैं? हम एक हैं। (नज़्म का इख़्तिताम, शायर के नाम - जाँ निसार अख़्तर - की दस्तख़त के साथ।)
