تین سوال Teen Sawaal (Three Questions)

मगध के पास एक गाँव में एक औरत रहती थी, जिसका शौहर मर चुका था। उसका एक ही बेटा था और वह बहुत चाहती थी कि वह पढ़-लिखकर बड़ा आदमी बने। उसने अपने बेटे को एक मदरसे में दाख़िल करा दिया। लड़का बहुत मेहनती था, ख़ूब दिल लगाकर पढ़ता और अपना सारा वक़्त पढ़ने-लिखने में गुज़ारता। एक रात उसने ख़्वाब में देखा कि उसकी शादी मगध के राजा की बेटी राजकुमारी से हो गई है। यह देखकर उसकी आँख खुल गई तो वह बहुत ख़ुश हुआ और उसे हँसी आ गई। मगर फ़ौरन उसे यह ख़याल भी आया कि यह कैसे हो सकता है - वह कहाँ, और राजा की बेटी कहाँ! यह सोचकर वह रोने लगा।

In a village near Magadh lived a widow with her only son. She dearly wished for him to study and become someone great, so she enrolled him in a madrasa. The boy studied with great dedication, spending all his time on his lessons. One night he dreamed that he was married to the princess, the daughter of the King of Magadh. When he woke up he was overjoyed and laughed with delight - but then it struck him how impossible this seemed, given who he was and who she was, and he began to cry instead.

उसकी माँ ने यह हालत देखकर उससे पूछा कि क्या बात है, वह कभी हँस रहा है कभी रो रहा है। लड़के ने कोई जवाब न दिया और चुपचाप मदरसे चला गया, मगर उसका दिल पढ़ाई में न लगा। घर लौटकर भी माँ ने वजह पूछी, मगर उसने कुछ न बताया। इस बात पर माँ को ग़ुस्सा आया और उसने राजा के दरबार में जाकर उसकी शिकायत कर दी। राजा ने लड़के को बुलाकर उसकी हँसी-रुलाई की वजह पूछी, मगर लड़के ने वहाँ भी कोई जवाब न दिया। राजा को बहुत ग़ुस्सा आया और उसने लड़के को जेल में बंद करने का हुक्म दे दिया। माँ बहुत रोई, मगर राजा ने उसे बाहर निकलवा दिया।

Seeing him laugh one moment and cry the next, his mother asked what was wrong. The boy gave no answer and went off to the madrasa in silence, unable to concentrate on his lessons. Back home, his mother asked again, but he still would not tell her. Angered, she went and complained to the raja's court. The raja summoned the boy and asked the reason for his laughing and crying, but the boy stayed silent even there. Furious, the raja ordered the boy locked up in jail. His mother wept bitterly, but the raja had her sent away.

कुछ दिन गुज़रने के बाद बाज़ार में एक एलान हुआ कि जो कोई भी राजा के तीन सवालों के सही जवाब दे देगा, उसे बहुत बड़ा इनाम मिलेगा। यह ख़बर लड़के तक भी पहुँची। जेल के कोठरी की खिड़की के पास आकर उसने भी सुना - सवाल थे: सबसे नीचे कौन-सी मछली है, राजा की मुट्ठी में कौन-सी चीज़ छुपी है, और राजा का हाथी कैसे नापा जाएगा। लड़के ने पहरेदार को बुलाकर कहा कि वह भी सवालों के जवाब दे सकता है। उसे राजा के सामने पेश किया गया।

Some days later, an announcement was made in the marketplace: whoever could correctly answer the raja's three questions would receive a great reward. This news reached the boy too, as he heard it through his cell window. The riddling questions were: which fish lies at the very bottom of the pond, what is hidden in the raja's closed fist, and how could the raja's elephant be weighed. The boy called out to the guard that he could answer, and he was brought before the raja.

राजा ने पहला सवाल पूछा कि तालाब में सबसे नीचे कौन-सी मछली है। लड़के ने कहा कि उसे कुछ वक़्त और पानी चाहिए यह बताने के लिए, और राजा से ताज़ा पानी का हौज़ माँगा। उसे हौज़ में बारी-बारी लकड़ियों की मछलियाँ छोड़ने दी गईं और आख़िर में एक असली मछली, जो डूबकर सबसे नीचे बैठ गई। लड़के ने बता दिया कि जो सबसे नीचे बैठे वही असली और सबसे नीचे की मछली है। इसके बाद उसने राजा की बंद मुट्ठी में छुपी चीज़ के बारे में भी सही अंदाज़ा लगाकर बता दिया। राजा उसके इन जवाबों से बहुत ख़ुश हुआ।

The raja asked his first question: which fish lies at the very bottom of the pond. The boy asked for time and a tank of fresh water, into which wooden fish and one real fish were released one by one; the real fish sank and settled at the very bottom, and the boy correctly explained that whichever one settles lowest is the true bottom-most fish. He then also correctly guessed what was hidden inside the raja's closed fist. The raja was delighted with both answers.

आख़िरी सवाल था कि राजा का हाथी कैसे नापा जाए। लड़के ने एक तरकीब सुझाई: हाथी को एक कश्ती पर चढ़ाकर पानी में उसका निशान लगाया जाए, फिर हाथी उतारकर उतने ही निशान तक कश्ती में पत्थर भर दिए जाएँ - इस तरह पत्थरों का वज़न ही हाथी के वज़न के बराबर होगा। राजा इस जवाब से भी बेहद ख़ुश और हैरान हुआ और उसने लड़के को बड़ा इनाम देकर आज़ाद कर दिया। कुछ दिन बाद राजा को एक ख़त मिला जिसमें एक बुज़ुर्ग ने लिखा कि यहाँ के लोग बहुत अक़्लमंद हैं, अगर कोई नौजवान अपनी अक़्लमंदी से इनाम पाना चाहे तो राजा उसे अपनी राजकुमारी से भी आज़मा सकता है। राजा ने उसी लड़के को याद किया और उसका ख़्वाब सुनकर उसकी शादी अपनी बेटी से करा दी - इस तरह लड़के का शुरू का सपना आख़िरकार सच साबित हुआ।

The final question was how to weigh the raja's elephant. The boy suggested a clever method: load the elephant onto a boat and mark the waterline, then unload the elephant and load stones into the boat until it sinks to the same mark - the weight of the stones would then equal the elephant's weight. The raja was amazed and delighted, rewarded the boy richly, and set him free. Some days later the raja received a letter from an elder praising the cleverness of the people there, suggesting that if any bright young man wished to prove himself, the raja could even test him against his own princess. The raja remembered this same boy, learned of his old dream, and had him married to his daughter - and so the boy's very first dream finally came true.
