کچھوا اور تالاب Kachhua aur Talaab (The Tortoise and the Pond)

बहुत पुराने ज़माने की बात है, जब एक जंगल में तरह-तरह के जानवर आपस में मिल-जुलकर रहते थे। एक साल बारिश बिल्कुल नहीं हुई। जंगल की सारी नदियाँ, नाले और तालाब सूखकर ख़त्म हो गए, और पानी की सख़्त क़िल्लत हो गई। जानवर प्यास से मरने लगे, और उनकी हालत देखकर जंगल के राजा शेर ने सारे जानवरों की एक सभा बुलाई ताकि इस मुसीबत का कोई हल निकाला जा सके।

Long ago, many different animals lived together peacefully in a forest. One year it did not rain at all. Every stream, brook and pond in the forest dried up completely, and there was a terrible shortage of water. The animals began dying of thirst, and seeing their plight, the lion, king of the forest, called a meeting of all the animals to find a solution to this crisis.

सभा में अलग-अलग जानवरों ने अपनी-अपनी राय दी। लंगूर ने कहा कि उन्हें किसी ऐसे मुल्क में चला जाना चाहिए जहाँ यह ख़ुश्की न हो, क्योंकि उसका पेड़ ही सूख चुका था। गीदड़ ने कहा कि वह इतना लंबा सफ़र नहीं कर सकता। साँप ने सुझाव दिया कि फिर उन्हें ख़ुद ही पानी का कोई इंतज़ाम करना चाहिए। ख़रगोश ने पूछा कि वे इतने दिन बग़ैर पानी के आख़िर कैसे रह सकते हैं। आख़िरकार सबके सामने यह बात आई कि सब मिलकर एक तालाब खोदें - बारिश आने पर वह तालाब पानी से भर जाएगा और पानी की कमी दूर हो जाएगी। सबने यह बात मान ली, और अगले दिन से तालाब की खुदाई का काम शुरू करने का फ़ैसला हुआ।

In the meeting, different animals gave their own suggestions. The langur said they should move to a country where there was no such drought, since even his tree had dried up. The jackal said he could not manage such a long journey. The snake suggested that they should instead arrange for water themselves. The hare asked how they could possibly survive so many days without water. Finally, it was agreed that they would all dig a pond together - once the rains came, the pond would fill with water and solve the shortage. Everyone accepted this idea, and it was decided that the digging would begin the very next day.

अगले दिन से तालाब खोदने का काम शुरू हुआ। राजा शेर ने ख़ुद सबसे पहले काम शुरू किया, और फिर बारी-बारी से सारे जानवरों ने अपने-अपने हाथ लगाए - किसी ने पंजों से मिट्टी खोदी तो किसी ने और तरीक़े अपनाए। सबने मिलकर मेहनत की, और आख़िरकार गीदड़ और कछुए की बारी आने से पहले ही ज़ोर की बारिश हो गई और तालाब पानी से पूरी तरह भर गया। इस वजह से गीदड़ और कछुआ खुदाई के काम में हिस्सा ही नहीं ले पाए।

From the next day, the digging began. King Lion himself started the work first, and then, one by one, all the animals took their turn helping - some dug with their paws, others in their own way. Everyone worked hard together, and eventually, before the jackal's and tortoise's turn even arrived, heavy rain fell and the pond filled up completely with water. Because of this, the jackal and the tortoise never actually got to take part in the digging work.

चूँकि गीदड़ ने खुदाई के काम में कोई हिस्सा नहीं लिया था, इसलिए जानवरों ने फ़ैसला किया कि वह इस तालाब का पानी नहीं पी सकेगा। मगर गीदड़ बहुत चालाक था। जब बाक़ी जानवर सो जाते, तो वह चुपके से रात में तालाब पर आता और छुप-छुपकर पानी पी जाता। इस तरह बार-बार चोरी-छुपे पानी पीने से तालाब का पानी गंदा और मैला हो गया। जब दूसरे जानवर पानी पीने आए तो उन्होंने तालाब को गंदा पाया और बहुत नाराज़ हुए - सबने मिलकर तय किया कि जो भी यह हरकत कर रहा है, उसे रंगे हाथों पकड़ा जाए। कछुए ने कहा कि वह ख़ुद सारी रात तालाब के किनारे बैठकर चोर का इंतज़ार करेगा।

Since the jackal had not taken part in the digging, the animals decided he would not be allowed to drink the pond's water. But the jackal was very cunning. Once the other animals fell asleep, he would sneak to the pond at night and drink the water secretly. Because of this repeated secret drinking, the pond water became dirty and muddy. When the other animals came to drink the next day, they found the pond fouled and were very upset - they agreed together that whoever was doing this should be caught red-handed. The tortoise volunteered to sit at the edge of the pond all night himself and wait for the thief.

कछुआ तालाब के किनारे बैठकर एक पत्थर की तरह बिल्कुल स्थिर हो गया, ताकि कोई उसे पहचान न सके। गीदड़ रोज़ की तरह रात को निकला, इधर-उधर देखकर तसल्ली कर ली कि कोई उसे देख नहीं रहा। जब वह तालाब के क़रीब पहुँचा तो उसे एक ख़ूबसूरत-सी सूरत वाला पत्थर नज़र आया - असल में वह कछुआ ही था। गीदड़ ने सोचा कि पैर रखने के लिए यह पत्थर अच्छा रहेगा, और उसने अपने अगले दोनों पैर उस पर रख दिए और गर्दन झुकाकर पानी पीने लगा। मगर जैसे ही उसने पैर बढ़ाकर पानी पीना चाहा, उसके दोनों अगले पैर उस 'पत्थर' से चिपककर जम गए।

The tortoise sat at the edge of the pond and stayed absolutely still, like a stone, so that no one would recognise him. The jackal came out at night as usual, checked all around to make sure no one was watching him, and when he reached near the pond, he spotted what looked like a fine-shaped stone - which was actually the tortoise. Thinking it would make a good place to rest his feet, the jackal placed his two front paws on it and lowered his neck to drink. But the moment he tried to drink, his two front paws got stuck fast to the 'stone'.

गीदड़ घबरा गया और धमकी देने लगा कि वह इस पत्थर का ख़ोल तोड़ डालेगा। कछुए ने शांति से कहा, 'जो जी चाहे करो।' गीदड़ ने जैसे ही मुँह से कछुए के ख़ोल पर वार करना चाहा, उसका मुँह भी कछुए से चिपककर फँस गया। गीदड़ ने अपने आपको छुड़ाने की बहुत कोशिश की, मगर कामयाब नहीं हुआ - उसने अपने पिछले पाँव भी ज़ोर से खोल पर मारे, तो वे भी उसी तरह चिपककर फँस गए। इस तरह गीदड़ के चारों पाँव और मुँह - सब कछुए से चिपककर जम गए। जब कछुए ने ख़बर-सुनी (शोर) की, तो सब जानवर दौड़कर वहाँ इकट्ठा हो गए।

The jackal panicked and threatened to break the stone-like shell open. The tortoise calmly said, 'Do whatever you wish.' The moment the jackal tried to bite at the tortoise's shell, his mouth too got stuck fast to it. The jackal tried very hard to free himself but failed - he even struck his back paws hard against the shell, and they too got stuck in the same way. In this way, all four of the jackal's paws and his mouth were now stuck fast to the tortoise. When the tortoise made a noise, all the animals came running and gathered there.

हर जानवर ने गीदड़ को अपने-अपने तरीक़े से बुरा-भला कहा। जब शेर आया तो उसने कहा कि गीदड़ को जान से मार दिया जाए - यही इस चोरी की सज़ा है। सबने मिलकर उसे उसकी दुम से पकड़कर ज़मीन पर घुमाकर मारा। गीदड़ बहुत चालाक तो था, मगर उस रात उसकी सारी चालाकी काम न आई - मार खाते-खाते उसकी दुम पकड़ से छूट गई और वह किसी तरह जान बचाकर भाग निकला। उस दिन के बाद से गीदड़ फिर कभी उस तालाब पर नहीं आया, मगर आज भी कछुआ हर रात तालाब के किनारे चौकसी करता रहता है, ताकि कोई गीदड़ दोबारा आकर पानी को गंदा न कर दे।

Every animal scolded the jackal in his own way. When the lion arrived, he ruled that the jackal should be put to death - that was the punishment for his theft. Together, the animals caught him by the tail, swung him around, and struck him against the ground. The jackal had always thought himself very clever, but that night all his cleverness was of no use - as he was being beaten, his tail slipped free of their grip, and he somehow escaped with his life and ran away. From that day on, the jackal never returned to that pond, but even today the tortoise keeps watch at the pond's edge every single night, so that no jackal can ever come back and dirty the water again.
