ہوائی قلعے Hawai Qile (Castles in the Air)

ड्रामे की शुरुआत में मुंशी जी की बीवी चूल्हा फूँकने की कोशिश कर रही है, गीली लकड़ियों से परेशान होकर बड़बड़ा रही है। तभी मुंशी जी बाहर से आते हैं और बड़ी बेचैनी से पूछते हैं कि कोई तार तो नहीं आया। पता चलता है कि आज मुंशी जी की नौकरी में तरक़्क़ी वाली तारीख़ है - आज सात साल पूरे होने पर उन्हें उम्मीद है कि उनके ऊपर वाले साहब की तरफ़ से एक ज़रूरी तार आएगा। वह इतने बेचैन हैं कि टिकट तक ख़ुद जाकर लाने को तैयार हो जाते हैं। इतने में सलीम नाम का पड़ोसी लड़का दरवाज़े पर आ जाता है और मुंशी जी से हाल-चाल पूछता है।

The play opens with Munshi Ji's wife struggling to light the stove, grumbling over damp firewood. Munshi Ji comes in from outside and anxiously asks whether any telegram has arrived. It turns out that today is an important anniversary in Munshi Ji's job - seven years are completing, and he is hoping for an important telegram from his senior officer about a promotion. He is so restless that he is even ready to go and fetch a stamp himself. Just then the neighbour's boy Saleem arrives at the door and asks Munshi Ji how he is doing.

मुंशी जी सलीम से पूछते हैं कि आते वक़्त रास्ते में कोई तार वाला साइकिल पर नज़र आया या नहीं। सलीम कहता है नहीं आया। फिर मुंशी जी बताते हैं कि वह एक तार वाले का इंतज़ार कर रहे हैं, और साथ ही यह भी बताते हैं कि पास के बाग़ के क़रीब एक ख़ूबसूरत दोमंज़िला लाल रंग की कोठी बिकने को है, जो उन्हें बहुत पसंद आई है। इतने में मुंशी जी की बीवी भी वहाँ आ जाती है और मज़ाक़ में सलीम से कहती है कि अगर मुंशी जी को कोई इनाम मिल गया तो वह चालीस हज़ार माँगते ही पचास हज़ार दे देंगे।

Munshi Ji asks Saleem if he saw any telegram-boy on a bicycle on his way over. Saleem says no. Munshi Ji then explains he is waiting for a telegram-man, and also mentions there is a beautiful red two-storey mansion for sale near the nearby garden that he has taken a great liking to. At this point Munshi Ji's wife also joins them and jokes to Saleem that if Munshi Ji gets some prize money, he would give fifty thousand the moment anyone asked for forty thousand - showing how carried away his dreaming has become.

मुंशी जी अपने मंसूबे और बढ़ा-चढ़ाकर बताने लगते हैं - वह कहते हैं कि सिर्फ़ कोठी और ज़मीन ही नहीं ख़रीदेंगे, एक अच्छी-सी मोटर भी लेंगे, बल्कि मोटर नहीं, हवाई जहाज़ लेने की बात करने लगते हैं। बीवी हैरान होकर कहती है कि यह मोटर नहीं, हवाई जहाज़ की बात हो रही है! सलीम भी हैरान होकर पूछता है कि क्या मुंशी जी सच में यह सब कह रहे हैं। मुंशी जी हँसकर मानते हैं कि यह सब सिर्फ़ हवाई मंसूबे हैं - अभी तक कोई तार आया ही नहीं, फिर भी वे इतनी बड़ी-बड़ी बातें बना रहे हैं।

Munshi Ji keeps exaggerating his plans further - he says he will not just buy a mansion and land, but also a fine car; then not just a car, he starts talking about buying an aeroplane! His wife, astonished, says this has gone from talking about a car to talking about an aeroplane! Saleem too is amazed and asks if Munshi Ji is really serious about all this. Munshi Ji laughs and admits it is all just castles in the air - no telegram has even arrived yet, and still they are making such huge plans.

दूसरे मंज़र में मुंशी जी और भी जोश में आ जाते हैं। वह कहते हैं कि अगर उन्हें इनाम मिल गया तो वह नौकरी से इस्तीफ़ा तक दे देंगे, क्योंकि उनके एक बड़े भाई की चालीस रुपये माहवार की नौकरी भी उन्होंने ठुकरा दी थी, यह सोचकर कि वह ख़ुद अपनी ज़मीन-जायदाद से गुज़ारा कर लेंगे। बीवी ताना मारती है कि यह इस्तीफ़ा-वस्तीफ़ा किसी शायद ही ख़बर की बात है। इतने में दूर से तार वाले की आवाज़ सुनाई देती है - 'तार ले जाइए!' यह सुनकर घर में हलचल मच जाती है, और मुंशी जी तार वाले को बुलाने के लिए दौड़ पड़ते हैं।

In the second scene Munshi Ji gets even more carried away. He says that if he gets a prize, he will even resign from his job, since he had once turned down his elder brother's offer of a job at forty rupees a month, thinking he would manage on his own land and property instead. His wife taunts him that this talk of resignations is perhaps just wishful thinking. Just then, from a distance, they hear the telegram-man's voice calling out - 'Telegram, come and collect it!' This causes a flurry of excitement in the house, and Munshi Ji rushes off to call the telegram-man in.

तार वाला एक रुपया लेकर तार दे जाता है। अब सबसे बड़ा तमाशा शुरू होता है - मुंशी जी काँपते हाथों से तार पकड़े खड़े हैं, मगर उसे खोलने की हिम्मत नहीं जुटा पा रहे। वह बीवी से कहते हैं कि वही खोले, बीवी कहती है कि तुम ख़ुद क्यों नहीं खोलते, यूँ मुंशी जी और बीवी के बीच यह तार कौन खोले - इसी बात पर मज़ेदार नोक-झोंक होती है। आख़िरकार मुंशी जी बिस्मिल्लाह करके ख़ुद तार खोलने की हिम्मत जुटाते हैं, दिल की धड़कन तेज़ है और हाथ काँप रहे हैं।

The telegram-man delivers the telegram for one rupee. Now the funniest scene begins - Munshi Ji stands there holding the telegram with trembling hands, but cannot summon the courage to open it. He asks his wife to open it; she asks why he doesn't open it himself. A comic back-and-forth breaks out over who should open the telegram. Finally Munshi Ji, saying 'Bismillah', gathers the courage to open it himself, his heart pounding and hands shaking.

जब तार खुलता है और मुंशी जी उसे पढ़ते हैं, तो सब कुछ बदल जाता है - यह तार मुंशी जी की तरक़्क़ी के बारे में था ही नहीं! यह तो सलीम के भाई महमूद का तार है, जिसमें लिखा है कि सलीम की भाभी कल शाम ट्रेन से आ रही हैं। यानी जिस तार का मुंशी जी और उनकी बीवी को इतना बेसब्री से इंतज़ार था, वह उनके लिए था ही नहीं - सलीम के लिए था, और उसकी ख़बर भी बहुत मामूली-सी निकली। मुंशी जी और बीवी के सारे बड़े-बड़े हवाई मंसूबे - कोठी, मोटर, हवाई जहाज़, इस्तीफ़ा - सब एक झटके में टूट जाते हैं। यही ड्रामे का हँसाने वाला, चौंकाने वाला अंत है, जिससे 'हवाई क़िले' नाम सही साबित होता है।

When the telegram is finally opened and read, everything changes - it was never about Munshi Ji's promotion at all! It turns out to be a telegram from Saleem's brother Mahmood, saying that Saleem's sister-in-law is arriving by train tomorrow evening. The telegram that Munshi Ji and his wife had been waiting for so anxiously was never meant for them at all - it was for Saleem, and its news was quite ordinary. All of Munshi Ji and his wife's grand imaginary plans - the mansion, the car, the aeroplane, the resignation - collapse in an instant. This is the play's funny, surprising ending, which proves exactly why it is titled 'Castles in the Air'.
