तोप Top (The Cannon)

कवि कहते हैं कि कंपनी बाग के दरवाज़े पर एक पुरानी तोप रखी है। इसे एक विरासत मानकर सँभाला जाता है और साल में दो बार चमकाया जाता है। यह तोप यहाँ बहुत दिनों से रखी है, यानी अंग्रेज़ों के ज़माने से।

The poet says an old cannon stands at the gateway of the Company Garden. It is kept and preserved as heritage, and is polished twice a year. This cannon has been placed here for a very long time, that is, since the days of British rule.

कवि कहते हैं कि यह तोप मानो खुद बताती है कि वह कितनी ताक़तवर थी। अपने समय में इसने बड़े-बड़े वीरों को मारकर उनके टुकड़े-टुकड़े कर दिए थे। यह उसकी ताक़त और घमंड का ज़माना था।

The poet says the cannon itself seems to tell how powerful (jabar) it once was. In its time it had blown great warriors and brave men to pieces, that is, destroyed them. That was the time of its strength and pride.

कवि कहते हैं कि अब वही ताक़तवर तोप सिर्फ़ दिखावे की चीज़ रह गई है। अब बच्चे इस पर चढ़कर इसे घोड़ा बनाकर सवारी करते हैं और खेलते हैं। जो कभी बहुत खतरनाक थी, वही अब बच्चों का खिलौना बन गई है।

The poet says that same mighty cannon has now become a mere showpiece. Nowadays, especially morning and evening, children climb on it and ride it as if it were a horse, playing on it. The one that was once destructive has now become a children's toy.

कवि कहते हैं कि जब तोप बच्चों के खेल से खाली होती है, तब उस पर चिड़ियाँ बैठकर चहचहाती हैं। कभी-कभी गौरैया तो उसके अंदर तक घुस जाती है, जैसे वह अब उसे अपना घर समझती हो। जो कभी डर पैदा करती थी, उसी में अब छोटी चिड़िया बेखौफ़ रहती है।

The poet says that when the cannon is free (farig) from the children's play, birds sit on it and chirp. Sometimes a sparrow even goes inside it, as if it now treats the cannon as its own home. The one that once spread fear now shelters a tiny fearless bird inside it.

कवि कहते हैं कि यह तोप चाहे कितनी भी बड़ी और ताक़तवर रही हो, आख़िर में वह आज बस एक खिलौना बनकर रह गई है। इससे कवि यह बताते हैं कि कोई कितना भी ज़ालिम और ताक़तवर क्यों न हो, समय आने पर उसकी ताक़त खत्म हो जाती है। घमंड और ज़ुल्म हमेशा नहीं रहते।

The poet says that however great and powerful this cannon may once have been, in the end (bahrhaal) it has today been reduced to a mere toy. Through this the poet suggests that however cruel and powerful anyone may be, in time their power ends. Arrogance and oppression do not last forever.
