तीसरी कसम के शिल्पकार शैलेंद्र Shailendra, the Craftsman of 'Teesri Kasam'

लेखक बताते हैं कि गीतकार शैलेंद्र ने अपनी पूरी ज़िंदगी में सिर्फ एक ही फिल्म 'तीसरी कसम' बनाई। उन्होंने यह फिल्म पैसे कमाने के लिए नहीं, बल्कि अपनी खुशी और कला के प्रति सच्चाई के लिए बनाई। वे जानते थे कि इससे आसानी से फायदा नहीं होगा, फिर भी उन्होंने अपना सब कुछ इसमें लगा दिया।

The author tells us that the lyricist Shailendra produced only one film in his life, 'Teesri Kasam'. He made this film not to earn commercial profit but for his own self-satisfaction and his honesty towards art. He knew it was not an easy bargain for profit, yet he poured everything he had into it.

यह फिल्म मशहूर लेखक फणीश्वरनाथ रेणु की कहानी 'मारे गए गुलफाम' पर बनी थी, और इसे बासु भट्टाचार्य ने निर्देशित किया। शैलेंद्र ने कहानी की असली भावना और छोटी-छोटी बातों को पूरी सच्चाई से परदे पर दिखाया। इसी वजह से इसे एक आम फिल्म नहीं, बल्कि 'सेल्युलाइड पर लिखी गई कविता' कहा गया।

The film was based on the famous writer Phanishwarnath Renu's story 'Maare Gaye Gulfaam', and was directed by Basu Bhattacharya. Shailendra carried the true spirit and the fine details of the story onto the screen with complete honesty. For this reason it was called not an ordinary film but 'poetry written on celluloid'.

इस फिल्म में राजकपूर ने बैलगाड़ी चलाने वाले सीधे-सादे हीरामन का किरदार निभाया। शैलेंद्र राजकपूर के पक्के दोस्त थे। जब फिल्म शुरू हुई तो राजकपूर ने मज़ाक में पहले पैसे माँगे, और शैलेंद्र ने उन्हें सिर्फ एक रुपया दिया। राजकपूर ने यह फिल्म दोस्ती और कला से प्यार के कारण सिर्फ एक रुपये में की।

In this film Raj Kapoor played Hiraman, the simple, innocent bullock-cart driver. Shailendra was a close friend of Raj Kapoor. When the film began, Raj Kapoor jokingly asked for his fee in advance, and Shailendra gave him just one rupee. Out of friendship and love of art, Raj Kapoor did this film for a fee of only one rupee.

लेखक के अनुसार शैलेंद्र मानते थे कि कलाकार को जनता की पसंद के स्तर तक नीचे नहीं गिरना चाहिए, बल्कि जनता की पसंद को ऊपर उठाना चाहिए। वे अपने गीतों में सस्ती शोहरत के लिए समझौता नहीं करते थे। उनके गीत भावना और कविता से भरे होते थे, और वे अपनी सच्चाई पर डटे रहते थे।

According to the author, Shailendra believed that an artist should not stoop to the level of the public's taste but should instead raise that taste higher. He did not compromise in his songs for cheap popularity. His songs were full of feeling and poetry, and he stood firm on his artistic honesty.

'तीसरी कसम' के गीत और संगीत की निबंध में खास तारीफ की गई है। शंकर-जयकिशन के संगीत में बने गीत जैसे 'सजन रे झूठ मत बोलो', 'दुनिया बनाने वाले' और 'सजनवा बैरी हो गए हमार' कहानी की भावना से गहराई से जुड़े थे। ये गीत सीधे दर्शक के दिल तक पहुँचते थे और फिल्म की कविता जैसी सुंदरता को और बढ़ाते थे।

The songs and music of 'Teesri Kasam' are specially praised in the essay. The film won the President's gold medal and was praised abroad too, yet in the market no distributor was willing to buy it. Profit-driven distributors did not take to this artistic film, so it failed commercially. A success in terms of art, the film proved a failure in terms of money.

फिल्म के पैसे में फेल होने ने भावुक शैलेंद्र को अंदर तक तोड़ दिया। जिस कलाकृति में उन्होंने अपना सब कुछ लगाया था, उसे बाज़ार ने नकार दिया। इस सदमे को वे सह नहीं पाए और कम उम्र में ही उनका देहांत हो गया। लेखक बताते हैं कि शैलेंद्र ने अपनी कला की सच्चाई की बहुत बड़ी कीमत चुकाई।

The film's commercial failure broke the sensitive Shailendra deep within. The work of art into which he had put everything had to bear the market's neglect. He could not withstand this blow and died at a young age. The author underlines that Shailendra paid a heavy price for the honesty of his art.
