कारतूस (एकांकी) Kartoos (The Cartridges, a one-act play)

नाटक एक जंगल में लगे अंग्रेज़ों के खेमे से शुरू होता है। कर्नल अपनी पूरी सेना के साथ वहाँ वज़ीर अली को पकड़ने के लिए रुका हुआ है। लेफ़्टिनेंट पूछता है कि एक अकेले आदमी के पीछे इतनी बड़ी फ़ौज और इतनी मेहनत क्यों? कर्नल कहता है कि वज़ीर अली कोई आम आदमी नहीं है, वह बहुत ख़तरनाक और बहादुर है।

The play opens at a British camp in the jungle. The Colonel, with his whole army, is camped there to capture Wazir Ali. The Lieutenant asks why such a large force and so much effort are being spent on a single man. The Colonel replies that Wazir Ali is no ordinary man; he is very dangerous and very brave.

कर्नल वज़ीर अली की कहानी बताता है। अंग्रेज़ों ने वज़ीर अली से अवध की गद्दी छीनकर उसके चाचा सआदत अली को नवाब बना दिया और वज़ीर अली को बनारस भेज दिया। वहाँ कंपनी के वकील ने उसका अपमान किया और उसकी बात नहीं सुनी, तो गुस्से में वज़ीर अली ने वकील को मार डाला। फिर वह आज़मगढ़ से होते हुए घाघरा के जंगलों में आ गया और अपनी ताक़त बढ़ाने लगा।

The Colonel narrates Wazir Ali's story. The British stripped Wazir Ali of the throne of Awadh, installed his uncle Sadat Ali in his place, and sent Wazir Ali to Banaras. There, when the Company's Vakil (lawyer) insulted him and refused to hear his grievance, an enraged Wazir Ali killed the Vakil. He then fled through Azamgarh into the jungles near the Ghagra river, where he began gathering strength.

कर्नल बताता है कि वज़ीर अली अकेला नहीं था। उसने अंग्रेज़ों के ख़िलाफ़ मदद के लिए अफ़गानिस्तान के बादशाह शाहे-ज़मा को हिंदुस्तान बुलाया था, और उधर टीपू सुल्तान भी अंग्रेज़ों से लड़ रहा था। उस समय कंपनी के ख़िलाफ़ पूरे हिंदुस्तान में एक लहर फैल गई थी।

The Colonel relates that Wazir Ali was not alone. He had invited Shah-e-Zaman, the king of Afghanistan, to come to India and help against the British, while on the other side Tipu Sultan too was fighting the British. At that time a wave of resistance against the Company had spread across all of India.

तभी एक घुड़सवार के आने की आवाज़ आती है। एक अकेला सवार खेमे के पास आकर रुकता है और बिना डरे कर्नल से मिलना चाहता है। उसकी हिम्मत देखकर कर्नल हैरान होता है। सवार कहता है कि वह वज़ीर अली का चाहने वाला है और उसे पता चला है कि वज़ीर अली आस-पास ही कहीं है।

Just then the sound of an approaching horse is heard. A lone rider halts near the camp and, without any fear, asks to meet the Colonel. The Colonel is amazed at his boldness. The rider says he is a well-wisher of Wazir Ali and that he has learnt Wazir Ali is somewhere nearby.

सवार कर्नल को यक़ीन दिला देता है कि वह वज़ीर अली को पकड़वाने में अंग्रेज़ों की मदद करना चाहता है, पर इसके लिए उसे कारतूस चाहिए। उसकी बातों में आकर और उसकी बहादुरी से प्रभावित होकर कर्नल उसे कारतूस दे देता है। काम होने के बाद सवार जाने को तैयार होता है।

The rider convinces the Colonel that he wishes to help the British capture Wazir Ali, but for that he needs cartridges. Taken in by his words and impressed by his bravery, the Colonel hands him the cartridges. With his purpose served, the rider gets ready to leave.

जाते समय कर्नल उसका नाम पूछता है। तब सवार मुड़कर बता देता है कि वही वज़ीर अली है, जिसे पकड़ने के लिए कर्नल ने इतना बड़ा इंतज़ाम किया था। इतना कहकर वह अपना घोड़ा तेज़ दौड़ाकर अँधेरे में चला जाता है। अंग्रेज़ कुछ नहीं कर पाते।

As the rider departs, the Colonel asks his name. The rider turns and reveals that he himself is Wazir Ali, the very man for whom the Colonel had laid this whole trap. Saying this, he spurs his horse and disappears into the darkness. The British are unable to do anything.

अपने ही खेमे में, अपनी ही फ़ौज के बीच आकर, कर्नल से ही कारतूस लेकर वज़ीर अली का बच निकल जाना देखकर कर्नल हैरान रह जाता है। दुश्मन होने पर भी कर्नल वज़ीर अली की इस बहादुरी की तारीफ़ करता है। नाटक यहीं ख़त्म होता है और वज़ीर अली की निडरता दर्शक के मन में बैठ जाती है।

That Wazir Ali could walk into the Colonel's own camp, amidst his own army, take cartridges from the Colonel himself, and escape, leaves the Colonel utterly stunned. Even though Wazir Ali is his enemy, the Colonel admires this extraordinary courage. The play ends here, leaving the audience deeply struck by Wazir Ali's fearlessness.
