डायरी का एक पन्ना A Page from the Diary

लेखक डायरी में लिखते हैं कि 26 जनवरी 1931 का दिन हमेशा याद रखने लायक है। एक साल पहले 26 जनवरी 1930 को पहली बार पूरे देश में स्वाधीनता दिवस मनाया गया था और पूरी आज़ादी की प्रतिज्ञा ली गई थी। इस बार फिर वही मनाना था।

The author writes in his diary that 26 January 1931 is an immortal day, always to be remembered. A year earlier, on 26 January 1930, Independence Day had been celebrated for the first time across the country and the pledge of complete independence (Purna Swaraj) had been taken; this day was its repetition.

इस दिन को मनाने के लिए खूब तैयारी हुई, सिर्फ़ प्रचार पर ही करीब दो हज़ार रुपये खर्च हुए। दूसरी तरफ़ पुलिस कमिश्नर ने सभा पर रोक का नोटिस निकाला और कार्यकर्ताओं को कहा कि अगर वे शामिल हुए तो उन पर मुकदमा चलेगा। पूरे शहर में पुलिस, घुड़सवार और मोटरगाड़ियाँ लगा दी गईं।

Great preparations were made to mark the day; nearly two thousand rupees were spent on publicity alone. On the other hand, the Police Commissioner issued a notice banning the gathering and warned activists that they would be prosecuted if they took part. Police, mounted cavalry and motorcars were posted throughout the city.

घोषणा हुई थी कि ठीक चार बजकर चौबीस मिनट पर मोनुमेंट के नीचे झंडा फहराया जाएगा और आज़ादी की प्रतिज्ञा पढ़ी जाएगी। पुलिस सुबह छह बजे से ही मोनुमेंट और आसपास के मैदानों को घेरकर बैठ गई थी, ताकि कोई सभा न हो पाए।

It had been announced that at exactly twenty-four minutes past four the flag would be hoisted below the Monument and the pledge of freedom read out. The police had surrounded the Monument and the nearby grounds from six in the morning so that no meeting could take place.

इस दिन औरतों ने बढ़-चढ़कर हिस्सा लिया। मारवाड़ी बालिका विद्यालय में सुबह ग्यारह बजे झंडा फहराने का कार्यक्रम हुआ, जहाँ जानकी देवी और मदालसा मौजूद थीं। औरतें अलग-अलग जुलूस निकालकर मोनुमेंट की तरफ़ बढ़ीं, बहुत-सी औरतें पकड़ी गईं। उनके इस साहस ने आंदोलन को नई ताकत दी।

Women took part wholeheartedly that day. A flag ceremony was held at the Marwari Balika Vidyalaya at eleven in the morning, where Janaki Devi and Madalsa were present. Women set out in separate processions towards the Monument; many were arrested. Their courage gave the movement fresh strength.

तय समय के आसपास सुभाष चंद्र बोस की अगुवाई में जुलूस निकला, जिसे पुलिस ने रोक दिया। पुलिस ने भीड़ पर लाठियाँ चलाईं, जिससे बहुत-से लोग घायल हो गए। सुभाष बोस को गिरफ़्तार करके लालबाज़ार के हवालात ले जाया गया। कई लोग घायल हुए और कई अस्पताल पहुँचाए गए।

Around the appointed hour a procession set out under the leadership of Subhash Chandra Bose; the police stopped it. The police wielded lathis on the crowd, injuring many people. Subhash Bose was arrested and taken to the Lalbazaar lockup. Many were injured and several were taken to hospitals.

पुलिस के कड़े पहरे और मार के बाद भी लोग पीछे नहीं हटे। लोगों ने मोनुमेंट के नीचे झंडा फहरा ही दिया और आज़ादी की प्रतिज्ञा भी पढ़ी। जिस काम को सरकार ने रोका था, उसे लोगों ने अपने साहस से करके दिखाया।

Despite the strict police cordon and the beating, the people did not retreat. They did hoist the flag below the Monument and read the pledge of freedom. Thus the very act the government had tried to prevent, the people accomplished through their courage.

लेखक लिखते हैं कि इस दिन ने यह सोच तोड़ दी कि कलकत्ता के लोग आज़ादी के लिए कुछ नहीं करते। मिलकर दिखाई गई इच्छा और साहस से साबित हो गया कि कलकत्ता भी आज़ादी की लड़ाई में पीछे नहीं है। डायरी का यह पन्ना उसी ऐतिहासिक दिन का सच्चा हिसाब है।

The author writes that this day broke the notion that the people of Calcutta did nothing for freedom. Through organised public will and courage it was proved that Calcutta too was not behind in the freedom struggle. This page of the diary is a truthful account of that historic day.
