अन्योक्तयः Anyoktayah (Allegorical Verses)

एक राजहंस से सरोवर को जो शोभा मिलती है, वह चारों ओर तट पर रहने वाले हजारों बगुलों से भी नहीं मिलती। अर्थात: एक गुणवान व्यक्ति हजारों गुणहीनों से श्रेष्ठ होता है।

The beauty a single royal swan brings to a lake cannot be matched by thousands of herons living around its banks. One truly virtuous person surpasses a multitude of mediocre ones.

हे राजहंस! तुमने इस सरोवर में कमल की जड़ें खाईं, जल पिया और कमलों पर आश्रय लिया। अब बताओ, इस सरोवर का तुम किस कार्य से उपकार करोगे? कवि कृतज्ञता का पाठ पढ़ाता है।

O Royal Swan, you ate lotus stalks here, drank its water and rested on its lotuses. Tell me, by what deed will you repay this lake for its generosity? The poet teaches the duty of gratitude.

हे मालाकार! तुमने भीषण गर्मी में करुणापूर्वक थोड़े से जल से इस वृक्ष को पोषित किया। क्या यह पोषण वर्षा ऋतु में चारों ओर धारासार वृष्टि करने वाला बादल दे सकता है? नहीं। संकट में की गई थोड़ी सेवा महान होती है।

O Gardener, with just a little water and great compassion you nourished this tree during fierce summer heat. Can the monsoon cloud, pouring torrents everywhere, provide that same nourishment? The poet teaches that timely compassionate help is priceless.

हे सरोवर! पक्षी आकाश में उड़ गए, भौंरे आम की मंजरियों पर चले गए। परन्तु जब तुम तुरन्त सूख गए, तो अत्यन्त दीन-हीन मछली अब कहाँ जाए? यह श्लोक आश्रितों की असहाय अवस्था का वर्णन करता है।

Birds flew up into the sky and bees sought refuge in mango blossoms. But O Lake, when you dried up suddenly, where can the poor helpless fish go? The verse depicts the plight of those who depend entirely on one benefactor.

वन में केवल एक ही स्वाभिमानी पक्षी रहता है, वह है चातक। वह या तो प्यासा रहकर मर जाता है, या केवल इन्द्र (पुरन्दर) से ही वर्षाजल की याचना करता है। अन्य किसी से याचना नहीं करता।

In the forest there lives only one truly self-respecting bird: the chataka. It either dies of thirst or begs only Indra, the cloud-lord, for rain. It never begs from any lesser source, teaching noble self-esteem.

हे बादल! तुमने सूर्य की गर्मी से तपे हुए पर्वतों को और दावानल से पीड़ित वनों को सींचा, सैकड़ों नदी-नालों को भर दिया। सब दे-देकर रिक्त हो जाना ही तुम्हारी सर्वोच्च शोभा है। यही परोपकार का सर्वोच्च आदर्श है।

O Cloud, you reassured mountains scorched by the sun, revived forests devastated by wildfires, and filled hundreds of rivers and streams. Becoming empty after giving everything is your highest glory, the supreme ideal of selfless service.

हे चातक! ध्यान से सुनो: आकाश में अनेक बादल हैं, परन्तु सभी एक जैसे नहीं हैं। कुछ वृष्टि से धरती को तृप्त करते हैं, कुछ व्यर्थ ही गरजते हैं। इसलिए जो भी बादल दिखे, उसके सामने दीन-भाव से मत जाओ। विवेक से ही याचना करो।

O Chataka, listen carefully my friend: many clouds fill the sky but not all are alike. Some drench the earth with rain, others merely thunder in vain. Do not go begging pitifully before every cloud you see. Be discerning in whom you approach for help.
