प्राणेभ्योऽपि प्रियः सुहृदः Pranebhyopi Priyah Suhrdah (A Friend Dearer than Life)

चाणक्य ने अपने शिष्य से कहा: बेटे, मैं अभी रत्न-व्यापारी श्रेष्ठी चन्दनदास से मिलना चाहता हूँ। शिष्य ने कहा: ठीक है (वह बाहर गया और चन्दनदास को साथ लेकर आया): इधर आइए, श्रेष्ठीजी!

Chanakya said: Dear student, I wish to meet the gem-merchant Chandanadas right now. The disciple said: Very well. (He goes out and returns with Chandanadas.) This way, this way, O merchant!

चाणक्य ने कहा: श्रेष्ठीजी, आपका स्वागत है। क्या आपके व्यापार में लाभ बढ़ रहा है? चन्दनदास ने मन में सोचा: इतना अधिक आदर संदेह का विषय है। फिर प्रकट रूप से बोला: और क्या, आपकी कृपा से मेरा व्यापार बिना किसी बाधा के चल रहा है।

Chanakya said: O merchant, welcome to you. Are the profits of your trade increasing? Chandanadas thought to himself: Excessive courtesy is cause for suspicion. Then aloud he said: Of course, by your grace my trade goes on unhindered.

चाणक्य बोले: श्रेष्ठीजी, यह चन्द्रगुप्त का राज्य है, नन्द का नहीं। नन्द के साथ तो धन का सम्बन्ध ही प्रेम उत्पन्न करता था। परन्तु चन्द्रगुप्त के राज्य में आपको कोई कष्ट नहीं होगा।

Chanakya said: O merchant, this is Chandragupta's kingdom, not Nanda's. With Nanda, only monetary ties produced affection. But in Chandragupta's reign, you shall face no hardship at all.

चाणक्य ने कहा: राजा के प्रति विरोधी आचरण मत करो। चन्दनदास बोला: आर्य, वह कौन अभागा व्यक्ति है जो राजा का विरोध करता है, ऐसा आप समझते हैं? चाणक्य बोले: तुम ही सबसे पहले हो।

Chanakya said: Conduct yourself without opposition to the king. Chandanadas replied: O noble one, who is that unfortunate person that you consider to be opposed to the king? Chanakya said: You yourself are the first one.

चाणक्य बोले: अमात्य राक्षस के घर के लोगों को तुमने अपने घर में छुपाया है। उन्हें हटाकर राजा के प्रति अपनी निष्ठा प्रमाणित करो।

Chanakya said: You have sheltered the family members of Amartya Rakshasa in your own house. Remove them and thereby demonstrate your loyalty to the king.

चन्दनदास बोला: आर्य, यह झूठ है। मेरे घर में अमात्य राक्षस के परिजन नहीं हैं।

Chandanadas replied: O noble one, this is false. There are no family members of Amartya Rakshasa in my house.

चाणक्य बोले: यदि ऐसा है तो फिर डर किस बात का? चन्दनदास ने सोचकर कहा: सुनिए, मित्र प्राणों से भी अधिक प्रिय होते हैं।

Chanakya said: If that is so, then why the fear? Chandanadas reflected and said: Listen, friends are dearer even than one's own life.
