विचित्रः साक्षी Vichitrah Sakshi (An Unusual Witness)

कोई एक गरीब आदमी बहुत परिश्रम करके थोड़ा-सा धन कमाया। उस धन से वह अपने पुत्र को एक महाविद्यालय में प्रवेश दिलाने में सफल हो गया। उसका बेटा वहीं छात्रावास में रहकर पढ़ाई में लग गया।

A certain poor man earned a little money through great effort. With that money he succeeded in getting his son admitted to a college. His son lived in the hostel there and became engrossed in his studies.

एक बार वह पिता अपने बेटे की बीमारी सुनकर बहुत परेशान हो गया और उसे देखने चल पड़ा। लेकिन गरीबी के कारण बस किराया नहीं था, इसलिए वह पैदल ही चलने लगा।

Once that father, hearing of his son's illness, became distressed and set out to see him. But afflicted by poverty, he left aside the bus and walked on foot.

पैदल चलते-चलते शाम हो गई फिर भी मंजिल दूर थी। 'रात के अँधेरे में सुनसान जगह पर पैदल जाना ठीक नहीं' यह सोचकर वह पास के एक गाँव में किसी गृहस्थ के घर रात गुज़ारने गया। दयालु गृहस्थ ने उसे शरण दे दी।

Walking on foot, even by evening he was still far from his destination. Thinking that walking in a deserted area in the darkness of night would not be safe, he approached a householder in a nearby village for a night's stay. The compassionate host gave him shelter.

भाग्य का खेल अजीब था। उसी रात उस घर में कोई चोर घुस गया। वहाँ रखी एक पेटी लेकर भाग निकला। चोर के पैरों की आवाज़ सुनकर जागे मेहमान ने चोर के संदेह में उसका पीछा किया और उसे पकड़ लिया।

Strange is the course of fate. That very night a thief entered the house. He took a box kept there and fled. Awakened by the thief's footsteps, the guest, suspecting theft, chased him and caught him.

लेकिन अजीब बात हुई। चोर खुद ही जोर-जोर से चिल्लाने लगा 'चोर है! चोर है!'। उसकी तेज़ आवाज़ सुनकर जागे गाँव वाले बाहर आए और बेचारे मेहमान को ही चोर समझकर डाँटने लगे। जबकि गाँव का आरक्षी ही असली चोर था। उसी ने मेहमान को 'यह चोर है' कहकर जेल में डलवा दिया।

But something strange happened. The thief himself began shouting loudly, 'Thief! Thief!' Awakened by his loud shrill voice, the villagers came out of their homes and scolded the innocent guest thinking him to be the thief. Yet the village constable was himself the thief. That very moment, the constable proclaimed him a thief and threw the guest into prison.

अगले दिन वह आरक्षी उसे चोरी के मुकदमे में न्यायालय ले गया। न्यायाधीश (बंकिमचन्द्र चटर्जी) ने दोनों को एक तालाब के पास ले जाकर पानी में डूबी पेटी निकालने को कहा। आरक्षी तुरंत सही जगह जाकर पेटी ले आया। इससे स्पष्ट हो गया कि आरक्षी ही असली चोर था।

The next day the constable took the guest to court on a charge of theft. The judge (Bankim Chandra Chatterjee) took both men to a pond and asked them to retrieve a box submerged in the water. The constable immediately went to the correct spot, knowing the exact location, and brought back the box. This made it clear that the constable was the real thief.

न्यायाधीश ने बिना किसी औपचारिक सबूत के भी अपनी चतुराई से सत्य का निर्णय किया। निर्दोष मेहमान को रिहा कर दिया गया और आरक्षी को सज़ा मिली। इस कहानी में 'अनोखा गवाह' खुद तालाब था, जिसकी मदद से न्यायाधीश ने सच्चाई उजागर की।

The judge determined the truth through cleverness alone, without formal evidence. The innocent guest was set free and the constable was punished. In this story, the 'unusual witness' was the pond itself, with whose help the judge revealed the truth.
