सुभाषितानि Subhashitani (Gems of Good Speech)

आलस्य मनुष्य के शरीर में रहने वाला सबसे बड़ा शत्रु है। परिश्रम के समान कोई बन्धु नहीं है, क्योंकि परिश्रम करने वाला कभी दुःखी नहीं होता।

Laziness is the great enemy residing within the human body. There is no friend equal to diligence, for one who works diligently never suffers.

गुणी ही गुण को जानता है, गुणहीन नहीं। बलवान ही बल को जानता है, कमज़ोर नहीं। कोयल वसन्त का गुण जानती है, कौआ नहीं। हाथी सिंह का बल जानता है, चूहा नहीं।

The virtuous know virtue, not the unvirtuous. The strong know strength, not the weak. The cuckoo knows the glory of spring, not the crow. The elephant knows the lion's might, not the mouse.

क्रोध मनुष्यों का पहला शत्रु है जो शरीर में रहकर शरीर को नष्ट करता है। जैसे लकड़ी में रहने वाली अग्नि उसी लकड़ी को जलाती है, वैसे ही क्रोध शरीर को जला देता है।

Anger is the first enemy of humans, residing in the body to destroy it. Just as fire in wood burns that very wood, so anger burns and destroys the body it lives in.

हिरण हिरणों के साथ, गायें गायों के साथ, घोड़े घोड़ों के साथ चलते हैं। मूर्ख मूर्खों के साथ और बुद्धिमान बुद्धिमानों के साथ मित्रता करते हैं। समान स्वभाव वालों में ही मित्रता होती है।

Deer go with deer, cows with cows, and horses with horses. Fools befriend fools and the wise befriend the wise. True friendship forms among those of similar nature and interests.

कोई भी अक्षर मन्त्र-रहित नहीं है, कोई भी जड़ी-बूटी औषधि-रहित नहीं है, कोई भी व्यक्ति अयोग्य नहीं है। केवल सही उपयोग जानने वाला दुर्लभ है।

There is no letter that is not a mantra, no plant that is not a medicine, no person who is incapable. What is truly rare is the person who knows how to put each to the right use.

महान लोग सुख और दुःख दोनों में एक समान रहते हैं। जैसे सूर्य उदय और अस्त दोनों समय लाल रहता है। इस विचित्र संसार में कुछ भी व्यर्थ नहीं है।

Great people remain the same in prosperity and adversity. The sun is red both at sunrise and sunset. In this wondrous world nothing is without purpose.
