जननी Janani (Mother)

This lesson is taken from the Vanaparva of the Mahabharata composed by Maharshi Vedavyasa. This story awakens the feeling of equal vision toward all living beings.

कोई किसान दो बैलों से खेत जोत रहा था। उन दोनों में से एक शरीर से कमजोर था और तेज चलने में असमर्थ था। इसलिए किसान उस दुर्बल बैल को बार-बार कोंचता रहा।

A certain farmer was plowing the field with two oxen. Of the two, one was weak in body and unable to move quickly. Therefore the farmer kept prodding that weak ox again and again.

वह बैल हल ढोकर चलने में असमर्थ हो गया और खेत में गिर पड़ा। क्रोधित किसान ने उसे उठाने का बार-बार प्रयास किया, फिर भी वह बैल नहीं उठा।

That ox, unable to carry the plow, fell in the field. The angry farmer tried many times to make it rise. Still the ox did not get up.

धरती पर गिरे अपने पुत्र को देखकर समस्त गायों की माता सुरभि की आँखों से आँसू बह निकले। इन्द्र ने सुरभि की यह दशा देखकर उससे पूछा: 'हे शुभे! क्यों इस तरह रो रही हो? बताओ।'

Seeing her son fallen on the ground, tears flowed from the eyes of Surabhi, mother of all cows. Indra saw Surabhi in this state and asked her: 'O auspicious one! Why do you weep like this? Please tell me.'

हे देवाधिप! आपको कोई संकट नहीं दिखता। किन्तु मैं तो अपने पुत्र के दुःख से दुःखी हूँ, इसीलिए रो रही हूँ।

O lord of the thirty gods! No calamity of yours is visible. But I am grieving for my son, and that is why I weep, O Kaushika!

हे इन्द्र! यद्यपि मेरे हजारों पुत्र हैं और सब पर मेरा समान प्रेम है, तथापि जो पुत्र दीन और दुर्बल है उस पर मेरी कृपा और भी अधिक होती है।

O Indra! Though I have a thousand sons and my love is equal for all, yet for the son who is poor and weak my compassion is even greater.

माता सभी संतानों से समान रूप से प्यार करती है। फिर भी दुर्बल बच्चे के प्रति उसकी ममता और करुणा और भी अधिक बढ़ जाती है।

A mother has equal affection for all her children. Yet her compassion and care for the weak child becomes even greater.
