शिशुलालनम् Shishulalanam (Nurturing of Children)

राम सिंहासन पर बैठे हैं। विदूषक मार्ग दिखाता हुआ तपस्वी वेश में लव और कुश को लेकर प्रवेश करता है। विदूषक कहता है: 'इस ओर आइए, आर्यो!' लव-कुश राम के पास जाकर प्रणाम करते हैं और पूछते हैं: 'महाराज, कुशल तो हैं?'

Rama is seated on the throne. Vidushaka enters, showing the way to the two young ascetics, Lava and Kusha. Vidushaka says: 'This way, noble ones!' Lava and Kusha approach Rama, bow in respect, and ask: 'Is the great king well?'

राम कहते हैं: 'तुम्हें देखकर कुशल जैसा लगता है। क्या हम यहाँ केवल कुशल-प्रश्न के पात्र हैं, अतिथि को मिलने वाले कण्ठाश्लेष के नहीं?' ऐसा कहकर वे दोनों को गले लगाते हैं और कहते हैं: 'आह, यह स्पर्श तो हृदय को छू लेने वाला है!'

Rama says: 'Seeing you, I feel well. Are we worthy only of a polite greeting, and not of the embrace appropriate for guests?' He then hugs them and exclaims: 'Ah, what a heart-capturing touch!'

दोनों ने कहा: 'यह राजसिंहासन है, इस पर बैठना उचित नहीं।' राम बोले: 'बीच में मेरी गोद का अंतर रखने से शील का उल्लंघन नहीं होगा, इसलिए गोद के सहारे सिंहासन पर बैठो।' दोनों ने अनिच्छा दिखाई और कहा: 'राजन, इतनी कृपा की क्या आवश्यकता।' राम ने कहा: 'इतने संकोच की भी क्या आवश्यकता।'

Both said: 'This is the royal throne, it is not proper for us to sit on it.' Rama replied: 'Sitting with my lap as an intermediary does not violate propriety, so please be seated on the throne with my lap between.' Both feigned reluctance, saying: 'Sire, there is no need for such great kindness.' Rama replied: 'There is also no need for such great modesty.'

राम ने श्लोक कहा: 'बालक-वर्ग, आयु के स्वभाव के अनुसार, गुणवानों का भी दुलार पाने के योग्य होता है। जैसे चंद्रमा भी अपने बाल-रूप के कारण शिव के मस्तक पर केतकी पत्र जैसी स्थान पाता है।'

Rama recited a verse: 'Children, by the natural demand of their age, are worthy of being nurtured even by the greatest of men. Even the moon, in its crescent form, comes to adorn the head of Shiva like a petal of the ketaki flower.'

राम ने कहा: 'तुम्हारे सौंदर्य को देखकर उत्सुकता से पूछता हूँ: क्षत्रिय कुल के पितामह सूर्य और चंद्र में से तुम्हारे वंश का कर्ता कौन है?' लव ने उत्तर दिया: 'भगवन, सहस्रदीधिति अर्थात् सूर्य।' राम ने कहा: 'तब तो तुम हमारे समान वंश के निकले!'

Rama said: 'Moved by curiosity on seeing your beauty, I ask: among the two ancestral patriarchs of the kshatriya clans, the sun and the moon, which is the founder of your lineage?' Lava replied: 'Holy sir, Sahasradidhiti, the sun.' Rama said: 'Then you turn out to be of the same lineage as us!'

लव ने कहा: 'हम दोनों भाई एक ही माँ के पुत्र हैं।' राम बोले: 'शरीर की बनावट एक जैसी है, आयु में कोई अंतर नहीं।' लव ने कहा: 'हम जुड़वाँ हैं।' राम ने कहा: 'अब समझ आया। तुम्हारे नाम क्या हैं?' लव ने कहा: 'आर्य की वंदना में मैं लव हूँ।' (कुश की ओर इशारा करते हुए)

Lava said: 'We two brothers are born of the same mother.' Rama said: 'Your physical appearance is identical and there is no difference in age.' Lava said: 'We are twins.' Rama said: 'Now it makes sense. What are your names?' Lava said: 'In salutation to the noble one, I am Lava.' (pointing to Kusha)
