टोपी शुक्ला Topi Shukla

टोपी और इफ़्फ़न एक ही शहर में रहते हैं, पर उनके धर्म और घर अलग हैं। टोपी हिंदू परिवार का है और उसका पूरा नाम बलभद्र नारायण शुक्ला है। इफ़्फ़न मुसलमान परिवार का है और उसका पूरा नाम सैयद ज़रगाम मुर्तुज़ा है। दोनों की दोस्ती बहुत गहरी है, धर्म अलग होने से उनकी दोस्ती में कोई फ़र्क नहीं पड़ता।

Topi and Iffan live in the same town, but their religions and families are different. Topi is a boy from a Hindu family, named Balbhadra Narayan Shukla. Iffan is a boy from a Muslim family, named Syed Zargam Murtuza. Iffan's family has had maulvis (religious scholars). The two boys share a deep friendship that recognises no wall of religion.

इफ़्फ़न की दादी लखनऊ के एक ज़मींदार (बड़े ज़मीनवाले) परिवार से थीं। उनका विवाह एक मौलवी परिवार में हुआ था, पर उन्होंने अपनी पूरबी बोली नहीं छोड़ी। यह बोली टोपी की माँ की बोली जैसी थी, इसलिए टोपी को बहुत पसंद थी। दादी टोपी को बहुत प्यार करती थीं और उसे कहानियाँ सुनाती थीं।

Iffan's grandmother was from a landlord family of Lucknow and belonged to the east. She was married into a maulvi (cleric) family, yet she did not give up her eastern (Purabi) dialect. This dialect resembled the dialect of Topi's mother, so Topi liked it very much. The grandmother loved Topi a great deal, told him stories, and treated him with affection.

अपने घर में टोपी को वैसा प्यार नहीं मिलता था जैसा इफ़्फ़न की दादी से मिलता था। टोपी की अपनी दादी सख़्त थीं और उसे डाँटती-मारती थीं। एक बार उसके बड़े भाई मुन्नी बाबू ने झूठा इलज़ाम लगाया कि टोपी ने कबाब खाया, जबकि कबाब मुन्नी बाबू ने ही खाया था, और इस पर टोपी को मार पड़ी। इसलिए टोपी इफ़्फ़न की दादी के पास प्यार ढूँढता था।

In his own home Topi did not receive the love he got from Iffan's grandmother. Topi's own grandmother was harsh and would scold and beat him. Once his elder brother Munni Babu falsely accused Topi of eating the kabab, though it was Munni Babu who had eaten it, and for this Topi was beaten. For this reason Topi sought belonging with Iffan's grandmother.

इफ़्फ़न के घर आते-जाते टोपी ने एक दिन अपनी माँ को 'अम्मी' कह दिया, जो मुसलमान घरों में माँ के लिए कहते हैं। यह सुनकर उसके हिंदू घर में तूफ़ान आ गया। घरवालों ने उसे डाँटा और इफ़्फ़न से उसकी दोस्ती पर भी ऐतराज़ किया। फिर भी दोनों की दोस्ती बनी रही।

From spending time at Iffan's home, one day Topi too called his mother 'Ammi', a word used for mother in Muslim households. On hearing this, a storm broke out in his Hindu family. The family scolded him for it and also objected to his friendship with Iffan. Even so, the friendship between Topi and Iffan continued.

एक दिन टोपी और इफ़्फ़न ने स्कूल नहीं गए और बातें करने लगे। टोपी ने मज़ाक में कहा कि वे अपनी दादियाँ आपस में बदल लें। इफ़्फ़न ने कहा कि बूढ़े लोग जल्दी मर जाते हैं। उसी दिन इफ़्फ़न की दादी मर गईं। दादी के मरने से टोपी बहुत दुखी हुआ, क्योंकि सबसे ज़्यादा प्यार उसे उन्हीं से मिलता था।

One day Topi and Iffan skipped school and began talking. Topi said in jest that they should exchange their grandmothers with each other. Iffan said that old people die soon. That very day Iffan's grandmother passed away. Her death grieved Topi deeply, for it was from her that he received the most affection.

कुछ समय बाद इफ़्फ़न के पिता का तबादला (दूसरे शहर में नौकरी) हो गया और इफ़्फ़न परिवार के साथ चला गया। अब टोपी बिलकुल अकेला रह गया। उसने तय किया कि वह ऐसे लड़कों से दोस्ती नहीं करेगा जिनके पिता की नौकरी बदलती रहती है। दादी का जाना और इफ़्फ़न का जाना, इन दोनों ने टोपी को बहुत अकेला कर दिया।

Some time later Iffan's father was transferred (a job in another town, Murtabad), and Iffan went away with his family. Now Topi was left completely alone. He resolved in his mind that he would not befriend boys whose fathers had transferable jobs. The loss of the grandmother and the departure of Iffan together left Topi in deep loneliness.

घर की परेशानियों और अकेलेपन की वजह से टोपी की पढ़ाई पर भी असर पड़ा। वह नौवीं कक्षा में एक से ज़्यादा बार फेल हुआ। उसे अध्यापकों और साथियों के ताने सुनने पड़े। फिर भी अपनी मेहनत से वह आगे बढ़ा। यह पाठ टोपी के मन के दुख और अकेलेपन को बड़े अपनेपन से दिखाता है।

Amid the troubles at home and his loneliness, Topi's studies were also affected. He failed more than once in the ninth grade. He had to bear taunts from teachers and fellow students. Even so, in the end he moved forward through his own effort. The lesson shows Topi's inner pain and loneliness with sympathy.
