हरिहर काका Harihar Kaka

कथावाचक बताता है कि हरिहर काका उसके पड़ोसी और बचपन के दोस्त हैं। काका के प्रति उसका लगाव कुछ काम के और कुछ विचारों के कारणों से है। हरिहर काका के कोई बच्चा नहीं है, उनकी दोनों पत्नियाँ गुज़र चुकी हैं, और वे अपने भाइयों के साथ एक ही परिवार में रहते हैं।

The narrator tells us that Harihar Kaka is his neighbour and childhood friend. His attachment to Harihar Kaka rests partly on practical and partly on ideological reasons. Harihar Kaka is childless, both his wives have died, and he lives with his brothers in a joint family.

हरिहर काका के परिवार के पास कुल साठ बीघा ज़मीन है, जिसमें से पंद्रह बीघा हिस्सा हरिहर काका का है। गाँव में ठाकुरबारी नाम का एक मंदिर है, जो गाँव के लोगों के लिए बहुत ज़रूरी है। लोग मानते हैं कि मंदिर को ज़मीन देने से पुण्य मिलता है और मुक्ति मिलती है। मंदिर का महंत काका की ज़मीन के बारे में जान जाता है।

Harihar Kaka's family owns sixty bighas of land in all, of which fifteen bighas are Harihar Kaka's share. In the village there is a temple called Thakurbari, which holds great importance in village life. People believe that donating land to the temple brings religious merit and salvation. The temple mahant comes to know about Harihar Kaka's land.

एक बार घर में मेहमान आते हैं, तो उन्हें अच्छा खाना दिया जाता है, पर हरिहर काका को सादा रूखा खाना मिलता है। इससे काका को बुरा लगता है। महंत इस मौके का फ़ायदा उठाकर काका को कहता है कि उनके भाई उन्हें सिर्फ़ ज़मीन की वजह से रखते हैं, और सलाह देता है कि वे अपनी ज़मीन मंदिर को दे दें ताकि उनका नाम हमेशा याद रहे और उन्हें मुक्ति मिले।

Once, when guests come to the house, they are served good food while Harihar Kaka is given only plain, dry food. This hurts him. The mahant uses this moment to tell Kaka that his brothers keep him only because of his land, and suggests that he donate his land to the temple so that his name will be remembered forever and he will attain salvation.

जब भाइयों को महंत के बहकाने की बात पता चलती है, तो पहले वे रोते हुए काका से माफ़ी माँगते हैं और उनका अच्छे से ध्यान रखते हैं, जिससे काका का भरोसा लौट आता है। पर जल्दी ही भाई डरते हैं कि कहीं काका ज़मीन मंदिर को न दे दें, इसलिए खुद उन पर दबाव डालने लगते हैं कि वे अपनी ज़मीन उनके (भतीजों के) नाम कर दें।

When the brothers learn of the mahant's prompting, they first tearfully apologise to Kaka and look after him well, so his trust returns. But soon, fearing that Kaka might give the land to the temple, the brothers themselves begin to pressure him to write his land over to them (to his nephews).

एक रात महंत के आदमी हरिहर काका को उठाकर मंदिर ले जाते हैं। वहाँ उन्हें एक कमरे में बंद करके, बाँधकर, ज़बरदस्ती सादे और लिखे हुए कागज़ों पर अँगूठा लगवाया जाता है। भाइयों को पता चलने पर वे पुलिस को बुलाते हैं; पुलिस सुबह मंदिर पर छापा मारकर काका को बंद कमरे से छुड़ा लेती है।

One night the mahant's men abduct Harihar Kaka and take him to the Thakurbari. There he is shut in a room, tied up, and his thumb impressions are forced onto blank and written papers. When the brothers get news of this, they call the police; at dawn the police raid the temple and free Kaka from the locked room.

छूटने के बाद भाई खुद काका से कहते हैं कि वे ज़मीन के कागज़ों पर दस्तखत कर दें और ऐसा न करने पर मारने की धमकी देते हैं। जब काका मना करते हैं और शोर मचाते हैं, तो भाई उनका मुँह बाँध देते हैं। पुलिस फिर आती है और काका के साथ हो रहे बुरे बर्ताव को देखती है। अब हरिहर काका समझ जाते हैं कि उनके भाई भी सिर्फ़ उनकी ज़मीन चाहते हैं, उनसे प्यार नहीं करते।

After being rescued, the brothers themselves demand that Kaka sign the land papers and threaten to beat him if he refuses. When Kaka refuses and raises an alarm, the brothers gag him. The police come again and see the mistreatment Kaka is suffering. Now Harihar Kaka understands that his brothers too want only his land, not him.

महंत और भाई, दोनों से खतरा देखते हुए पुलिस हरिहर काका की रक्षा के लिए सिपाही लगा देती है, जो गाँव में भी उनके साथ रहते हैं। हर तरफ़ के दबाव के बाद भी काका अपनी बात पर डटे रहते हैं कि वे जीते-जी अपनी ज़मीन किसी को नहीं देंगे; उनके मरने के बाद ज़मीन वैसे भी इन्हीं को मिल जाएगी, तो अभी लिखने की क्या ज़रूरत। वे उन बूढ़ों को याद करते हैं जिन्होंने ज़मीन लिख दी और बाद में दुख सहा।

Seeing danger from both the mahant and the brothers, the police station guards to protect Harihar Kaka, who stay with him even around the village. Despite pressure from every side, Kaka stays firm in his decision that he will not write his land over to anyone while he is alive; after his death the land will pass to them anyway, so why write it away now. He recalls old men who transferred their land and later suffered neglect.
