संगतकार Sangatkar (The Accompanist)

कवि कहते हैं कि मुख्य गायक की आवाज़ चट्टान जैसी भारी और मज़बूत है, और उसके साथ एक दूसरी आवाज़ भी चलती है जो सुंदर पर कमज़ोर और काँपती हुई है। यह संगतकार की आवाज़ है। कवि सोचते हैं कि वह कोई छोटा भाई, चेला या दूर का रिश्तेदार होगा, जो बहुत पुराने समय से मुख्य गायक का साथ दे रहा है।

The poet says that alongside the main singer's heavy, rock-like voice runs another voice, beautiful but weak and trembling. This is the accompanist's voice. The poet guesses he may be a younger brother, a pupil, or some distant relative who has accompanied the main singer since ancient times.

कवि कहते हैं कि जब मुख्य गायक मुश्किल और उलझी हुई तानों में खो जाता है और अपना रास्ता भूलने लगता है, तब संगतकार धीरे से मूल धुन (स्थायी) गाकर उसे याद दिला देता है। जैसे वह गायक को उसके बिखरे सामान और शुरुआती दिनों की याद दिला रहा हो, जब वह नया-नया सीख रहा था।

The poet says that when the main singer gets lost in the jungle of the complex melodic passages of the antara and starts to lose his way, the accompanist softly sings the sthayi (the main tune) to remind him. It is as if he reminds the singer of his scattered belongings and of his early days, the days when he was a novice still learning.

कवि कहते हैं कि गाते-गाते जब मुख्य गायक का गला ऊँचे सुर (तारसप्तक) में बैठने लगता है, उसकी हिम्मत और उत्साह कम होने लगता है, और आवाज़ से राख जैसा कुछ गिरता लगता है, तब संगतकार अपनी आवाज़ से उसका साथ देता है। इससे मुख्य गायक को लगता है कि वह अकेला नहीं है और गीत फिर से गाया जा सकता है।

The poet says that as he sings on, when the main singer's throat begins to give way in the high octave (taar saptak), his inspiration starts to desert him, his enthusiasm sets like the setting sun, and something like ash seems to fall from his voice, then the accompanist supports him with his own voice. This makes the main singer feel he is not alone, and that the song can be sung again.

कवि कहते हैं कि कई बार संगतकार जान-बूझकर अपनी आवाज़ मुख्य गायक से ऊँची नहीं करता, ताकि मुख्य गायक ही आगे रहे। उसके स्वर में एक हिचक (झिझक) भी सुनाई देती है। कवि कहते हैं कि अपनी आवाज़ को ऊँचा न करने की यह कोशिश उसकी हार या कमज़ोरी नहीं, बल्कि उसकी इंसानियत (मनुष्यता) मानी जानी चाहिए।

The poet says that at times the accompanist deliberately does not raise his voice above the main singer's, so that the lead stays foremost. A hesitation can also be heard in his voice. The poet says this effort of not raising his own voice should not be seen as his failure but should be understood as his humanity.
