नेताजी का चश्मा Netaji's Spectacles (Netaji ka Chashma)

हालदार साहब को अपनी कंपनी के काम से हर पंद्रह दिन में एक बार एक छोटे कस्बे से होकर गुज़रना पड़ता था। कस्बा आम-सा था, उसमें एक नगरपालिका, एक हाई स्कूल और एक बड़ा बाज़ार था। हालदार साहब की आदत थी कि कस्बे के बीच के चौराहे पर रुककर पान खाते और थोड़ा आराम करते।

Haldar Sahab had to pass through a small town once every fortnight for his company's work. It was an ordinary town with a municipality, a high school and a main market. It was his habit to stop at the town's main crossroads, eat paan and rest a while.

चौराहे पर नगरपालिका ने नेताजी सुभाष चंद्र बोस की संगमरमर की एक मूर्ति लगवाई थी। पैसे कम होने के कारण मूर्ति बनाने का काम कस्बे के हाई स्कूल के ड्राइंग मास्टर मोतीलाल को दिया गया था। मूर्ति सुंदर बनी, सेना की वर्दी में, पर मूर्ति की आँखों पर पत्थर का चश्मा नहीं था, मास्टर चश्मा बनाना भूल गया था। उसकी जगह मूर्ति पर एक सच का चश्मा लगा हुआ था।

At the crossroads the municipality had installed a marble statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. As the budget was small, the work was given to Motilal, the drawing master of the town's high school. The statue came out well, in an army uniform, but it had no stone spectacles on its eyes, the master had forgotten to carve them. In their place a real pair of spectacles had been fitted on the statue.

हालदार साहब ने देखा कि हर बार जब वे कस्बे से गुज़रते, मूर्ति पर लगा सच का चश्मा बदला हुआ होता, कभी गोल फ्रेम, कभी चौकोर, कभी कोई और। उन्हें यह बात बहुत अजीब और मज़ेदार लगी। एक दिन उन्होंने चौराहे के पानवाले से पूछा कि मूर्ति पर बार-बार चश्मा कौन बदलता है।

Haldar Sahab noticed that each time he passed through the town, the real spectacles on the statue had changed, sometimes a round frame, sometimes square, sometimes another kind. He found this very strange and interesting. One day he asked the paan-seller at the crossroads who kept changing the spectacles on the statue.

पानवाले ने हँसते हुए बताया कि यह काम 'कैप्टन चश्मेवाला' करता है। कैप्टन एक चश्मा बेचने वाला फेरीवाला है। जब कोई ग्राहक मूर्ति पर लगे फ्रेम जैसा चश्मा माँगता है, तो कैप्टन मूर्ति पर लगा फ्रेम उतारकर ग्राहक को दे देता है और मूर्ति पर अपना कोई दूसरा फ्रेम लगा देता है, ताकि नेताजी कभी बिना चश्मे के न रहें। हालदार साहब को लगा कि कैप्टन ज़रूर कोई फौजी रहा होगा।

Laughing, the paan-seller told him that 'Captain Chashmewala' did this. Captain was a hawker who sold spectacles. When a customer asked for a frame like the one on the statue, Captain would take the frame off the statue, give it to the customer, and fit another of his own frames on the statue, so that Netaji was never left without spectacles. Haldar Sahab assumed Captain must have been some soldier.

बाद में हालदार साहब ने कैप्टन को देखा तो हैरान रह गए, कैप्टन कोई तगड़ा फौजी नहीं, बल्कि एक बूढ़ा, कमज़ोर और लँगड़ा-सा गरीब आदमी था, जो सिर पर चश्मों की संदूकची उठाए फेरी लगाता था। पानवाला उसका मज़ाक उड़ाता था। फिर भी यह कमज़ोर आदमी नेताजी की मूर्ति का इतना सम्मान करता था। यह देखकर हालदार साहब का मन भर आया और कैप्टन के लिए उनके मन में इज़्ज़त बढ़ गई।

Later, when Haldar Sahab saw Captain, he was stunned, Captain was not a sturdy soldier but an old, frail, lame poor man who hawked spectacles with a little box of them on his head. The paan-seller used to mock him. Yet this weak man held such respect for Netaji's statue. Seeing this, Haldar Sahab's heart filled with emotion and his regard for Captain grew.

कुछ समय बाद एक बार हालदार साहब उसी चौराहे से गुज़रे तो देखा कि मूर्ति की आँखों पर कोई चश्मा नहीं था, मूर्ति बिलकुल खाली थी। उन्होंने पानवाले से पूछा तो पता चला कि कैप्टन अब इस दुनिया में नहीं रहा, उसकी मौत हो गई है। यह सुनकर पानवाला भी उदास हो गया और हालदार साहब का मन भारी हो गया। उन्हें लगा कि अब मूर्ति पर चश्मा लगाने वाला कोई नहीं बचा।

Some time later, when Haldar Sahab again passed that crossroads, he saw there was no spectacle on the statue's eyes, the statue was quite bare. When he asked the paan-seller, he learned that Captain was no longer alive, he had died. Hearing this, the paan-seller too grew sad and Haldar Sahab's heart became heavy. He felt that now there was no one left to put spectacles on the statue.

अगली बार हालदार साहब उदास मन से चौराहे से गुज़र रहे थे, उनका मूर्ति देखने का भी मन नहीं था। फिर भी उनकी नज़र मूर्ति पर पड़ी और वे चौंक गए, मूर्ति की आँखों पर सरकंडे (छोटी लकड़ी जैसी घास) का बना एक छोटा-सा कच्चा चश्मा लगा हुआ था, जो किसी बच्चे ने बनाकर लगाया था। यह देखकर हालदार साहब की आँखें भर आईं। उन्हें यकीन हो गया कि देशभक्ति अभी मरी नहीं है, वह बच्चों और आम लोगों के मन में आगे भी ज़िंदा रहेगी।

The next time, Haldar Sahab was passing the crossroads with a heavy heart and had no wish even to look at the statue. Yet his eyes fell on it and he was startled, on the statue's eyes was a small, rough spectacle made of sarkanda (a reed-like grass), made and placed there by some child. Seeing this, Haldar Sahab's eyes filled with tears. He became sure that patriotism had not died, it would live on in children and ordinary people too.
