लखनवी अंदाज़ Lakhnavi Andaz (The Lucknow Style)

लेखक को एक नई कहानी सोचने के लिए एकांत चाहिए था, इसलिए भीड़ से बचने के लिए उसने ट्रेन का सेकंड क्लास का टिकट लिया। उसने सोचा कि डिब्बा खाली मिलेगा और वह आराम से सोच पाएगा।

The author wanted solitude to think of a new story, so to escape the crowd he bought a second-class train ticket. He expected the compartment to be empty so that he could think in peace.

डिब्बे में चढ़ते ही लेखक ने देखा कि वहाँ पहले से एक सजे-धजे नवाब साहब बैठे हैं और उनके सामने तौलिये पर दो ताज़े खीरे रखे हैं। लेखक का आना नवाब साहब को पसंद नहीं आया, वे खिड़की के बाहर देखते हुए थोड़े असहज और नाराज़-से लगे। लेखक ने सोचा कि नवाब साहब अकेले सफ़र में पैसे बचाने के लिए सेकंड क्लास में आए होंगे।

On boarding, the author saw a well-dressed nawab already seated, with two fresh cucumbers placed on a towel before him. The author's arrival did not please the nawab; gazing out of the window, he seemed somewhat uneasy and displeased. The author guessed that the nawab had taken second class to economise while travelling alone.

थोड़ी देर बाद नवाब साहब ने शिष्टाचार दिखाते हुए लेखक से पूछा कि क्या वे खीरा खाना पसंद करेंगे। लेखक ने विनम्रता से मना कर दिया। लेखक समझ गया कि नवाब साहब अपनी झेंप मिटाने और बात को सामान्य बनाने के लिए ही ऐसा पूछ रहे हैं।

After a while the nawab, showing courtesy, asked the author whether he would care to eat a cucumber. The author politely declined. The author sensed that the nawab was saying this only to cover his awkwardness and to make the situation seem normal.

इसके बाद नवाब साहब ने बहुत सलीके से खीरों को धोया, छीला और बराबर फाँकों में काटा। फिर उन फाँकों पर जीरा-नमक और लाल मिर्च छिड़की। खीरे की खुशबू से उनके मुँह में पानी आ रहा था और उनका जबड़ा खाने की चाह से हिल रहा था।

Then the nawab, with great care, washed, peeled and cut the cucumbers into even slices. He sprinkled cumin-salt and red chilli over the slices. The fragrance of the cucumber made his mouth water and his jaw trembled with the craving to eat.

पर नवाब साहब ने एक भी फाँक मुँह में नहीं डाली। उन्होंने हर फाँक को सिर्फ़ सूँघा और एक-एक करके खिड़की के बाहर फेंक दिया। कुछ भी खाए बिना ही उन्होंने मज़े का डकार लिया और कहा कि खीरा स्वादिष्ट तो होता है, पर पचने में भारी होता है।

But the nawab did not put a single slice in his mouth. He merely smelt each slice and threw them out of the window one by one. Without eating anything at all, he gave a satisfied belch and remarked that cucumber is tasty but heavy to digest.

नवाब साहब का यह व्यवहार देखकर लेखक के मन में एक विचार आया। उसने सोचा कि जब बिना खाए, सिर्फ़ खीरे की खुशबू और कल्पना से ही पेट भरा महसूस हो सकता है और डकार आ सकती है, तो क्या बिना कहानी के ढाँचे, पात्र और घटना के, सिर्फ़ लेखक के भाव से भी एक कहानी लिखी जा सकती है। इस तरह यह कहानी दिखावे की संस्कृति पर व्यंग्य भी है और कहानी लिखने की कला पर एक टिप्पणी भी।

Watching the nawab's behaviour, a thought arose in the author's mind. He reflected that if satisfaction and a belch are possible without eating, through the mere scent and imagination of the cucumber, then could a story too be written without a plot, characters or events, through the author's intent alone. Thus the piece is both a satire on the culture of show and a comment on the craft of storytelling.
