आत्मकथ्य Atmakathya (My Life-Story / This Telling of the Self)

कवि कहते हैं कि जीवन के पेड़ से अनुभव की सूखी पत्तियाँ गिर रही हैं। मधुप यानी भौंरा (कवि का मन) गुनगुनाते हुए बीते दिनों की प्यारी यादों को बार-बार याद कर रहा है। सब लोग अपनी-अपनी कहानी सुना रहे हैं, तो क्या वे भी अपनी जीवन-कहानी सुनाएँ? कवि अपने आप से यही पूछते हैं।

The poet says that dry leaves of experience are falling from the tree of life. The bee (madhup), that is, his own mind, hums as it goes over the sweet memories of bygone days again and again. Everyone in the world is telling their own tale, so should he too narrate his life-story? This is the question the poet places before himself.

कवि कहते हैं कि उनका जीवन खाली घड़े जैसा है, उसमें कोई बड़ी बात भरी ही नहीं जिसे महान कहानी बनाया जाए। इस बड़े नीले आसमान के नीचे सब अपनी कहानी कह रहे हैं, पर कवि पूछते हैं कि इतने छोटे और मामूली जीवन की बड़ी कहानी भला कैसे बने।

The poet says his life is like an empty vessel, holding nothing that could be made into a great tale. Under this vast blue sky (of literature and the world) everyone is telling their story, but he asks how such a small and ordinary life could ever yield grand narratives.

कवि कहते हैं कि वे अपने जीवन की सिलाई (छिपे भेद) क्यों खोलकर दिखाएँ। जो लोग उनके पास रहे, उनकी मीठी पर धोखे वाली बातें सबके सामने बताना वे ठीक नहीं मानते। यह दुर्भाग्य ही होगा कि वे दूसरों के भोलेपन का और अपनी सरलता का मज़ाक बना दें। इसलिए वे कहते हैं, अपनी-अपनी समझो, मेरा रस मत लो (मुझसे यह सब मत कहलवाओ)।

The poet asks why he should unpick the seam (the hidden inner matters) of his life and display it. He does not think it right to lay bare, before everyone, the sweet but deceitful words of those who were close to him. It would be a sad irony for him to make a mockery of others' simplicity and of his own innocence. So he says, understand your own selves, do not draw this essence out of me.

कवि अपने प्रिय (पत्नी) के साथ बीती चाँदनी रात को याद करते हैं, जब रोशनी में हँसी-खुशी थी और प्रिय के लाल गालों की प्यारी छाया मन पर पड़ती थी। पर सुख गले लगते-लगते मुस्कुराकर भाग गया, यानी पूरा सुख कभी मिला ही नहीं। वह याद आज भी रास्ते में उनका सहारा है, पर इसे सबके सामने कहना वे नहीं चाहते।

The poet recalls a moonlit night spent with his beloved (his wife), when there was laughter in the light and the lovely, intoxicating shadow of her rosy cheeks fell upon his heart. But the joy, just as it came into his embrace, smiled and fled, that is, complete happiness was never truly his. That memory is still the provision (patheya) that supports him on his path, yet he does not wish to speak of it before everyone.

आख़िर में कवि कहते हैं कि उनका चुपचाप का दुख अभी थककर सो गया है। वे एक थके हुए राहगीर जैसे हैं और इस समय अपनी दुख भरी कहानी कहकर उस सोए दुख को जगाना नहीं चाहते। दूसरे अपनी कहानी कहते रहें, वे अभी चुप रहना ही ठीक समझते हैं, क्योंकि उनकी आत्मकथा कहने का समय अभी नहीं आया।

Finally the poet says that his silent pain has now fallen asleep, exhausted. He is like a weary traveller, and at this time he does not wish to tell his sorrowful tale and so wake that sleeping anguish. Let others go on telling their stories, he thinks it best to stay silent for now, for the time to tell his own life-story has not yet come.
