साना-साना हाथ जोड़ि Saana-Saana Haath Jodi (Folding Tiny Hands in Prayer)

लेखिका सिक्किम की राजधानी गंगटोक पहुँचती हैं। उन्हें यह शहर मेहनती लोगों का शहर लगता है। ऊँची-नीची पहाड़ियों पर घर बसे हैं और लोग कठिन जीवन में भी अपना जीवन सँवारते हैं। शाम को बौद्ध मठ की प्रार्थना की झंडियाँ और घूमने वाले धर्मचक्र देखकर माहौल शांत और आस्था से भरा लगता है।

The author reaches Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. The city seems to her a city of hardworking people, where, in houses set on rising and falling hills, people make a life even amid hardship. In the evening the Buddhist monastery's prayer flags and the turning prayer wheels make the atmosphere calm and full of faith.

लेखिका एक नेपाली लड़की को 'साना-साना हाथ जोड़ि' की प्रार्थना करते देखती-सुनती हैं। इस प्रार्थना का मतलब है, छोटे-छोटे हाथ जोड़कर हम प्रार्थना करते हैं और चाहते हैं कि हमारा पूरा जीवन अच्छाई और भलाई के लिए समर्पित हो जाए। इसी प्रार्थना से पाठ का नाम पड़ा है।

The author sees and hears a young Nepali woman offering the prayer 'Saana-saana haath jodi'. The meaning of this prayer is that, folding our tiny hands, we pray and wish to dedicate our whole life to goodness and well-being. This very prayer becomes the title of the chapter.

गाइड जितेन नार्गे बताता है कि यहाँ सफेद झंडियाँ किसी की मृत्यु पर लगाई जाती हैं और रंगीन झंडियाँ किसी शुभ काम की शुरुआत पर। घूमने वाला धर्मचक्र घुमाने से पाप धुल जाते हैं, ऐसा यहाँ माना जाता है। वह रास्ते भर यहाँ के रीति-रिवाज़ और आस्थाएँ समझाता रहता है।

The guide Jiten Narge tells the author that here white prayer flags are put up at someone's death, while coloured flags mark the start of an auspicious task. Turning the prayer wheel is believed to wash away sins, according to local belief. Along the way he keeps explaining the local customs and faith.

लेखिका गंगटोक से करीब 149 किलोमीटर दूर यूमथांग की ओर चलती हैं। रास्ते में चाँदी जैसी चमकती तीस्ता नदी तेज़ी से नीचे बहती दिखती है। ऊँचे पहाड़ों से झरने गिरते हैं। 'सेवन सिस्टर्स' झरने के पास रुककर वे ठंडे पानी में भीगती हैं और मन हल्का और पवित्र-सा महसूस करती हैं।

From Gangtok the author sets out towards Yumthang, about 149 kilometres away. On the way the river Teesta, gleaming like silver, is seen rushing downward. Waterfalls fall from high mountains. Stopping near the 'Seven Sisters' waterfall, she gets drenched in the cold water and feels her mind grow light and almost purified.

रास्ते में लेखिका देखती हैं कि सड़क बनाने के लिए पहाड़ी औरतें हथौड़े से पत्थर तोड़ रही हैं। कई औरतें अपनी पीठ पर टोकरी (डोको) में छोटे बच्चे बाँधे यह कठिन और खतरनाक काम कर रही हैं। सुंदर दिखने वाले इन पहाड़ों के पीछे इतनी कड़ी मेहनत और संघर्ष छिपा है, यह देखकर लेखिका का मन भर आता है।

On the way the author sees mountain women breaking stones with hammers to build the road. Many of them do this hard and risky work with small children tied in baskets (doko) on their backs. So much harsh toil and struggle lies hidden behind these beautiful-looking mountains, and seeing this the author is deeply moved.

लेखिका कटाओ पहुँचती हैं, जिसे 'भारत का स्विट्ज़रलैंड' कहते हैं। यहाँ बर्फ से ढकी चोटियाँ चाँदी जैसी चमकती हैं। बादलों के कारण कंचनजंगा चोटी साफ़ नहीं दिखती, पर खिले फूल और बर्फ़ीली घाटियाँ देखकर लेखिका खुश होती हैं। सीमा के पास देश की रक्षा करते सैनिकों को देखकर वे उनके त्याग को महसूस करती हैं।

The author reaches Katao, which is called 'India's Switzerland'. Here the snow-covered peaks shimmer like silver. Because of the clouds the Kanchenjunga peak is not clearly visible, but seeing the blooming flowers and snowy valleys the author is delighted. Seeing the soldiers guarding the country in this border region, she feels the weight of their sacrifice.

यात्रा के अंत में लेखिका महसूस करती हैं कि हिमालय का यह सौंदर्य सिर्फ़ देखने की चीज़ नहीं है। इसके पीछे पहाड़ी लोगों की कड़ी मेहनत छिपी है, बच्चे मीलों पैदल चलकर स्कूल जाते हैं और लौटते समय लकड़ियों का बोझ ढोते हैं। प्रकृति की सुंदरता और इंसान की मेहनत साथ-साथ चलती है। यहाँ के लोगों की पहाड़, नदी और झरनों में आस्था ही प्रकृति को बचाकर रखती है।

Towards the end of the journey the author feels that this beauty of the Himalayas is not merely something to look at. Behind it lies the harsh toil of the mountain people, children walking miles to school and carrying bundles of firewood on their way back. The beauty of nature and human labour move together. It is the local people's faith in the mountains, rivers and waterfalls that keeps nature protected.
