গল্প শুরু নিশ্চিন্দিপুর গ্রামে। সবুজ মাঠ, নদী, আমের বাগান - গ্রাম শান্ত ও সুন্দর। এখানেই হরিহর-রায় পরিবার বাস করে।
The story opens in Nischindipur - green fields, river, mango groves.
হরিহর রায় এক সৎ ব্রাহ্মণ; পুজোপাঠ করেন। স্ত্রী সর্বজয়া, ছেলে অপু, মেয়ে দুর্গা। পরিবার দরিদ্র কিন্তু একসাথে থাকে।

তাদের ঘর ছোট, মাটির; কিন্তু ভালোবাসায় ভরা। হরিহর স্বপ্ন দেখেন ছেলেদের ভালো হবে; এখনো কষ্টে দিন কাটে।
