भिक्षुक Bhikshuk (The Beggar)

एक भिखारी रास्ते पर चला आ रहा है। वह इतना गरीब और कमज़ोर है कि उसे देखकर देखने वाले का दिल टूट जाता है। भूख से उसका पेट और पीठ आपस में मिलकर एक हो गए हैं (पेट इतना अंदर धँस गया है कि पीठ से चिपक गया है)। वह लाठी के सहारे चल रहा है और मुट्ठी भर अनाज पाने के लिए, अपनी भूख मिटाने के लिए, फटी-पुरानी झोली फैला रहा है।

A beggar comes walking along the road. He is so wretched and weak that the onlooker's heart breaks into two pieces at the sight of him. With hunger his belly and back have merged into one (the stomach has sunk in so deep that it sticks to the back). He walks leaning on a stick, and to get a fistful of grain, to quiet his hunger, he spreads out his torn old begging-bag.

भिखारी के साथ उसके दो छोटे बच्चे भी हैं, जो हर समय हाथ फैलाए रहते हैं। वे बाएँ हाथ से अपना भूख से दुखता पेट मलते हुए चलते हैं और दाहिना हाथ इस उम्मीद में आगे बढ़ाए रहते हैं कि कोई दया की नज़र से देख ले। यानी एक हाथ अपनी भूख दबाता है, दूसरा भीख माँगता है।

Along with the beggar are his two little children, who keep their hands stretched out all the time. With the left hand they rub their (hunger-aching) bellies as they walk, and they stretch the right hand forward in the hope of receiving a kind, pitying glance. One hand presses down their own hunger; the other begs.

जब भूख से उनके होंठ सूख जाते हैं, तब वे सोचते हैं कि देने वाले भगवान से उन्हें मिलता ही क्या है? कुछ नहीं। इसलिए वे अपने आँसू पीकर ही रह जाते हैं। सड़क पर खड़े होकर वे लोगों की फेंकी हुई जूठी पत्तलें चाट रहे हैं, और उस बची हुई जूठन को छीन लेने के लिए कुत्ते भी उनसे झगड़ने को अड़े हुए हैं। (इंसान और कुत्ता एक ही जूठन के लिए लड़ रहे हैं: यह गरीबी की सबसे आख़िरी हद है।)

When their lips go dry with hunger, they wonder what they ever get from the giver, the maker of fate? Nothing. So they are left only swallowing gulps of their own tears. Standing on the road they lick the leftover food on the leaf-plates that people have thrown away, and even dogs stand firm, ready to snatch that scrap from them. (Human and dog competing for the same scraps: the extreme limit of poverty.)

यहाँ कवि की आवाज़ बदल जाती है। वह कहता है: ठहरो! मेरे दिल में अमृत है, मैं तुम्हें उससे सींच दूँगा। तुम महाभारत के वीर अभिमन्यु जैसे बहादुर बन सकोगे। मैं तुम्हारे सारे दुख अपने दिल में खींच लूँगा। यानी कवि दया को हिम्मत में बदल देता है: वह चाहता है कि ये दुखी लोग सिर्फ़ तरस के लायक न रहें, बल्कि अपने हालात से लड़ने वाले योद्धा बनें।

Here the poet's tone changes. He says: Stop! There is nectar in my heart, I will drench you with it. You will be able to become as brave as Abhimanyu, the hero of the Mahabharata. I will draw all your sorrows into my own heart. The poet turns compassion into courage: he wants these suffering people to stop being objects of pity and become warriors who fight their condition.
