भीड़ में खोया आदमी Bheed Mein Khoya Aadmi

लेखक के एक पक्के दोस्त हैं बाबू श्यामलाकान्त। लेखक को उनकी बेटी की शादी में जाने के लिए हरिद्वार जाना था। जब लेखक रेलवे के टिकट बुक कराने वाले दफ़्तर पहुँचा, तो वहाँ इतनी भीड़ थी कि सीट बुक ही नहीं हो पाई।

The narrator has a close friend, Babu Shyamlakant. The narrator had to go to Haridwar to attend his friend's daughter's wedding. When he reached the railway reservation office, there was such a crowd that he could not get a seat reserved at all.

बिना सीट बुक कराए ही लेखक एक कुली की मदद से खिड़की के रास्ते डिब्बे में चढ़ा। डिब्बे में इतनी भीड़ थी कि बिल्कुल भी जगह नहीं थी। लखनऊ में दूसरी गाड़ी भी उतनी ही भरी हुई थी, लोग ट्रेन की छत पर बैठकर सफ़र कर रहे थे।

Without a reservation, the narrator climbed into the compartment through the window with a porter's help. The compartment was so packed that there was not even room for a sesame seed. At Lucknow the connecting train was just as full, with people travelling sitting on the roof.

हरिद्वार में श्यामलाकान्त का बड़ा बेटा दीनानाथ लेखक को लेने आया। पढ़-लिखकर और नौकरी के दफ़्तर में नाम लिखाकर भी दीनानाथ को काम नहीं मिला, क्योंकि हर जगह बहुत भीड़ थी और एक नौकरी के लिए बहुत सारे लोग खड़े थे।

At Haridwar, Shyamlakant's elder son Deenanath came to receive the narrator. Even after studying and registering at the employment office, Deenanath had not found a job, because everywhere there was too much crowd (too much competition).

श्यामलाकान्त का परिवार बहुत बड़ा था, करीब दस-बारह लोग, पर रहने के लिए सिर्फ़ दो कमरे थे, क्योंकि बड़ा मकान मिलना मुश्किल था। श्यामलाकान्त की पत्नी बीमार और थकी हुई थीं। उन्होंने बताया कि अस्पताल में इतनी भीड़ रहती है कि डॉक्टर ठीक से इलाज ही नहीं कर पाते।

Shyamlakant's family was very large, about ten to twelve people, but they had only two rooms to live in, because a bigger house was hard to find. Shyamlakant's wife was ill and tired. She explained that the hospital is so crowded that the doctors cannot even treat patients properly.

शादी के लिए कपड़े सिलवाने थे, पर दर्ज़ी के पास इतना काम था कि उसने सिलाई के लिए मना कर दिया। छोटा बेटा सुमंत राशन की दुकान से लौटा, तो वह लंबी लाइन में खड़े-खड़े बुरी तरह थक चुका था। इस तरह घर के हर काम में भीड़ और लंबी लाइन सामने आती रही।

Clothes had to be stitched for the wedding, but the tailor had so much work that he refused to stitch them. The younger son Sumant returned from the ration shop completely exhausted after standing in a long queue. In this way, a crowd and a queue appeared in every single task of the household.

इन सब बातों से लेखक यह दिखाता है कि लोगों की बढ़ती गिनती की वजह से आने-जाने, नौकरी, रहने के घर, खाने और इलाज, हर चीज़ में मुसीबत खड़ी हो गई है। इस भीड़ में अकेले आदमी की कोई कीमत नहीं बची। लेखक का संदेश है कि हमें अपना परिवार छोटा रखना चाहिए, तभी सुख-शांति मिलेगी और देश खुशहाल होगा।

Through all these incidents the narrator shows that because of the growing population, trouble has arisen in every area: transport, employment, housing, food and health. In this crowd the single individual no longer matters. The narrator's message is that we should keep our family small; only then will there be peace and happiness, and the country will prosper.
