बहू की विदा Bahu ki Vida

जीवनलाल एक पचास साल का अमीर व्यापारी है। उसके बेटे रमेश की शादी कमला से हुई है। जीवनलाल को लगता है कि शादी में उसे उतना दहेज नहीं मिला जितना वह चाहता था, इसी से वह चिढ़ा हुआ रहता है और बहू कमला से अच्छा बर्ताव नहीं करता।

Jeevanlal is a fifty-year-old wealthy merchant. His son Ramesh is married to Kamla. Jeevanlal feels he did not get the dowry he expected at the wedding, so he stays annoyed and treats his daughter-in-law Kamla badly.

सावन का महीना आता है। कमला का भाई प्रमोद अपनी बहन को मायके ले जाने के लिए आता है, क्योंकि शादी के बाद पहला सावन लड़की अपने मायके में बिताती है। पर जीवनलाल कमला को भेजने से मना कर देता है।

The month of Sawan (monsoon) arrives. Kamla's brother Pramod comes to take his sister to her parents' home, as it is custom for a girl to spend her first Sawan after marriage at her maternal home. But Jeevanlal refuses to send Kamla.

जीवनलाल साफ़ कहता है कि जब तक बाकी पाँच हज़ार रुपये नकद नहीं मिलते, वह कमला को नहीं भेजेगा। वह इन पैसों को अपनी 'बेइज़्ज़ती की चोट का इलाज' बताता है। प्रमोद अपनी हैसियत के हिसाब से दहेज दे चुका है, इसलिए वह दुखी और बेबस हो जाता है।

Jeevanlal clearly says he will not let Kamla go until he receives the remaining five thousand rupees in cash. He calls this money the 'cure for the wound of his insult.' Pramod has already given dowry according to his means, so he becomes sad and helpless.

जीवनलाल की पत्नी राजेश्वरी अच्छे दिल वाली औरत है। वह पति से कहती है कि बहू को भी बेटी जैसा समझो और उसे जाने दो। पर जीवनलाल नहीं मानता और बेटी और बहू में फ़र्क़ बताता है।

Jeevanlal's wife Rajeshwari is a kind-hearted woman. She begs her husband to treat the daughter-in-law like a daughter and let her go. But Jeevanlal does not agree and insists there is a difference between a daughter and a daughter-in-law.

तभी जीवनलाल का बेटा रमेश लौटकर आता है। वह अपनी बहन गौरी (जीवनलाल की बेटी) को उसके ससुराल से लाने गया था, पर खाली हाथ लौटा है। गौरी के ससुराल वालों ने भी और दहेज माँगकर उसे भेजने से मना कर दिया।

Just then Jeevanlal's son Ramesh returns. He had gone to bring his sister Gauri (Jeevanlal's daughter) home from her in-laws, but came back empty-handed. Gauri's in-laws also refused to send her, demanding more dowry.

अपनी बेटी के साथ हुई यही नाइंसाफ़ी देखकर जीवनलाल की आँखें खुल जाती हैं। उसे समझ आता है कि वह भी किसी और की बेटी के साथ यही कर रहा था। वह मान लेता है कि बहू और बेटी में कोई फ़र्क़ नहीं, और कमला को खुशी-खुशी प्रमोद के साथ भेज देता है।

Seeing this same injustice happen to his own daughter, Jeevanlal's eyes are opened. He realises he was doing the very same thing to someone else's daughter. He accepts that there is no difference between a daughter-in-law and a daughter, and happily sends Kamla off with Pramod.
