رامائن کا ایک سین Ramayan ka Ek Scene (A Scene from the Ramayana)

राम पिता से विदा लेकर माँ से मिलने जाते हैं, अपना ग़म छिपाकर।

First stanza (verbatim; source: Rekhta / Intekhab-e-Chakbast). Meaning: taking God's name, Rama took leave of his father - the first stage of the path of duty was complete. Now he wishes to see his mother. Wiping his tears on his hem, he reasons within: if I show my helplessness the cruelty will only grow; seeing me sad will only deepen my mother's grief. (The son hides his own pain to spare his mother.)

माँ ग़म से सन्न, पीली, पत्थर की मूरत-सी बैठी है।

Steadying his heart, the youth (Rama) went quietly to his mother like a passing thought. He saw her sitting in a doorway, broken; the intensity of grief has frozen her into a daze. माँ - मैं अपने लाडले को जंगल जाने की 'हाँ' कैसे कहूँ?

Weeping, she says: my life, why do you stand silent? I know why you have come. Everyone's happiness lies in your setting out for the forest - but I will never say 'yes' with my own mouth. How can I send the apple of my eye into the wilderness, send my darling prince away as an ascetic? (The mother's love and helplessness.) (Verbatim; source: Rekhta.)

राम - सब्र रखो माँ; शायद इसी में ईश्वर की भलाई हो।

Then Rama submits before his grieving mother: why are you in despair, why such excess of sorrow? This blow is indeed hard in old age, but do not put patience and composure far from your heart. Perhaps the face of spring is hidden within autumn - perhaps in this lies some wise purpose of the Lord. (The son consoles his mother to be patient and accept the divine will.) ईश्वर का करम साथ हो तो जंगल भी माँ की गोद जैसा है।

From the closing part (verbatim; source: Rekhta). Rama says: my gaze is fixed on the grace of the Provider; if He is kind, the desert itself becomes a garden. Forest or mountain, journeying or at rest - He is never unaware of His servant's state. If His grace is with me there is no grief - the lap of the wilderness is no less than a mother's lap. (The poem ends on the message of tawakkul - trust in God.)
