साखी Sakhi

अगर गुरु और गोविंद (ईश्वर) दोनों एक साथ सामने खड़े हों, तो पहले किसके चरण छुए जाएँ, यह उलझन खड़ी हो जाती है। कबीर कहते हैं कि वे अपने गुरु पर ही सबसे पहले न्योछावर हैं, क्योंकि गुरु ने ही उन्हें गोविंद (ईश्वर) को पहचानने और पाने का रास्ता बताया।

If both the guru and God stood before you together, whose feet should be touched first? Kabir says he offers himself to his guru first of all, since it was the guru who showed him the very path to recognise and attain God.

जब तक मुझमें 'मैं' यानी अहंकार था, तब तक हरि (ईश्वर) की प्राप्ति नहीं हुई। अब जब हरि मिल गए हैं, तो वह अहंकार मिट गया है। कबीर कहते हैं कि प्रेम की गली बहुत ही सँकरी (तंग) होती है, जिसमें अहंकार और ईश्वर दोनों एक साथ नहीं समा सकते।

As long as I existed with my ego, God (Hari) was not attained; now that Hari is found, my ego is gone. Kabir says the lane of love is extremely narrow - it cannot hold both ego and God at once.

कंकड़-पत्थर जोड़कर मस्जिद बना ली गई है, और उस पर चढ़कर मुल्ला बाँग (अज़ान) देता है, मानो ईश्वर बहरा हो गया हो और उसे ऊँची आवाज़ में पुकारना पड़े। कबीर यहाँ बाहरी धार्मिक क्रियाओं और आडंबर पर तीखा व्यंग्य करते हैं, क्योंकि सच्चा ईश्वर तो हर हृदय में बसता है, उसे इस तरह पुकारने की ज़रूरत नहीं।

Stones and pebbles have been joined to build a mosque, and the mullah climbs it to call the azaan, as if God had gone deaf and needed to be summoned so loudly. Here Kabir delivers sharp satire on outward religious ritual and show, since the true God dwells in every heart and needs no such calling.

अगर पत्थर की पूजा करने से ही ईश्वर मिल जाते, तो कबीर कहते हैं कि वे इससे भी बड़े पहाड़ की पूजा कर लेते। इससे तो घर की चक्की भली है, क्योंकि वह अनाज पीसकर संसार को खिलाती है, यानी कम-से-कम वह किसी काम तो आती है, जबकि पूजी जाने वाली मूर्ति का पत्थर किसी काम नहीं आता।

If worshipping stone could grant God, Kabir says he would rather worship a whole mountain of stone. Better than that is the humble grindstone at home, which at least grinds grain to feed the world - of some real use - unlike the stone idol that is merely worshipped.

अगर पूरी धरती को काग़ज़ बना दिया जाए, संसार के सारे पेड़ों को कलम बना दिया जाए, और सातों समुद्रों को स्याही बना दिया जाए, तब भी गुरु के उपकार और गुणों को पूरी तरह लिखा नहीं जा सकता। कबीर यहाँ गुरु के प्रति अपनी असीम कृतज्ञता प्रकट करते हैं।

Even if the whole earth were turned into paper, all the world's trees into pens, and all seven seas into ink, still the guru's virtues and kindness could not be fully written down. Here Kabir expresses his boundless gratitude towards his guru.
