घाटात घाट वरंधाघाट Ghatat Ghat Varandhaghat (Of All Ghats, Varandha Ghat)

लेखक सुरुवातीला सांगतात की ज्येष्ठ महिना सुरू झाला की पावसाची चाहूल लागते. दरवर्षी येणारा हा पाऊस, त्याचा वारा आणि मातीचा वास तरीही दरवेळी नवा वाटतो. लेखकाला बालपणी पावसात भिजल्यावर घरच्यांचा ओरडा खाणे, कागदी होड्या करून पावसाच्या पाण्यात सोडणे अशा आठवणी येतात. मोठे झाल्यावर मात्र पावसाचा अर्थ वेगळ्या प्रकारे उमगतो, असे ते सांगतात.

At the start, the writer notes that as soon as the month of Jyeshtha begins, the first signs of the monsoon appear. The same wind and the smell of wet earth return every year, yet each time it feels new. The writer recalls playful childhood memories of the rains - getting scolded at home after getting soaked, or making paper boats to float in the rainwater. He observes that as one grows older, however, the meaning of the rain and the colours of the rainbow come to be understood differently.

लेखक पुण्याहून महाडकडे दुचाकीवरून प्रवास करतात. हिरवीगार झाडे पाहत, पावसाळी वातावरण अनुभवत केलेला हा प्रवास गाडीतून करण्यापेक्षाही जास्त मजेशीर असतो, असे ते सांगतात. पावसाचे पाणी अंगावर घेत, गार वारा झेलत, आवडती गाणी गुणगुणत केलेला हा प्रवास कधी संपूच नये असे लेखकाला वाटते. शेवटी मैलाचे दगड मागे पडत ते वरंधाघाटात येऊन पोहोचतात.

The writer sets out from Pune towards Mahad on a two-wheeler. Riding past lush green trees through the misty monsoon weather is, in his view, far more enjoyable than travelling in a closed car. Feeling the rain on his skin, splashing passers-by on the road, facing the wild wind, and humming favourite songs, the journey feels like it should never end - yet the milestones keep passing until he finally reaches Varandha Ghat.

वरंधाघाटात पोहोचल्यावर लेखकाला "घाटात घाट वरंधा घाट, बाकी सब घाटीयाँ" असे वाटते, म्हणजेच हा घाट सर्वात सुंदर वाटतो. पाण्यावर झुकलेल्या हिरव्यागच्च झाडीतून वाहणारे धबधबे, दरीतले हिरवे रान, ढगाळलेले डोंगर, दगडांवर आपटत वाहणारे पाणी असे निसर्गाचे सुंदर दृश्य दिसते. या पावसाळी वातावरणात घाटातल्या टपऱ्यांवर भजी-वडे-चहा असा गरमागरम नाश्ता मिळतो, जो लेखकाला खूप आवडतो.

On reaching Varandha Ghat, the writer feels that among all mountain passes this one stands supreme. Waterfalls roaring out of thick greenery leaning over the water, the green valley below, cloud-covered hills, steady rain and water dashing over huge rocks form a breathtaking sight that delights the eyes. In this rainy atmosphere, the writer especially enjoys the hot onion fritters, potato fritters and steaming tea served at the roadside stalls in the ghat.

वेळ मिळाल्यावर लेखकाला थोडे भिजावेसे, पाय मोकळे करावेसे वाटते, म्हणून ते कावळ्या किल्ल्याकडे जातात. हा किल्ला मोठा असून त्यानेच वरंधाघाटाचा शेवटचा टप्पा तयार केला आहे. श्री वाघजाई मंदिराच्या वरच्या भागात डोंगरमाथ्याजवळ नऊ पाण्याच्या टाक्यांचा समूह आहे. काळ्या दगडात खोदलेल्या या टाक्यांनी अनेक वर्षे लोकांची तहान भागवली असल्याचे लेखक सांगतात. परत येताना ओल्या, रंगीत मातीच्या पायवाटेने कपडे रंगतात.

After a while the writer feels like getting a bit wet and stretching his legs, so he heads towards Kavlya Killa, a fort meant for adventurous trekkers. The fort is fairly large and forms the last stretch of Varandha Ghat. Just above the Shri Waghjai temple, near the hilltop, lies a cluster of nine water tanks that once formed part of the fort. Carved into black rock, these tanks have quenched the thirst of many people over the years. On the way back, the wet, colourful mud path even leaves stains on one's clothes, the writer notes with amusement.

डांबरी रस्त्यावर परत आल्यावर लेखक कारवीच्या झाडीतून अरुंद पायवाटेने हृदयाची धडधड वाढवणारा ट्रेक सुरू करतात. डोंगराच्या सोंडेवरून जाताना डावीकडे खाली वरंधाघाटाचा वळणावळणाचा रस्ता कोकणाकडे उतरताना दिसतो. डोंगरधारेवरून जाणारी अरुंद पायवाट एका सपाटीवर येऊन थांबते. तिथून पुन्हा चालत गेल्यावर वरंधाघाटाचे सुंदर दर्शन घडते आणि जुन्या बुरुजाचे अवशेषही दिसतात.

Back on the tarred road, the writer's eyes settle on the narrow path leading to Kavlya Killa at the right turn. Crossing built steps, a heart-pounding trek through karvi shrubs begins along a narrow footpath. Walking along the ridge north of Varandha Ghat, he can see below to the left the winding road descending into the Konkan. The narrow path along the ridge's edge ends at a small flat stretch; from there, pushing through more karvi bushes and descending a small hillock, the final climb leads to a fine view of Varandha Ghat, where the remains of an old plinth and a crumbled bastion can be seen.

लेखक सांगतात की कोकणातला निसर्ग पाहत काही वेळ शांत उभे राहायला हवे, निसर्गाचा आनंद अनुभवायला हवा. परतीच्या प्रवासात पावसाचे ते क्षण, अरुंद पायवाटेवरचा थरार, कारवीच्या फांदीच्या मोडण्याचा आवाज हे सगळे आठवत राहते. हसवणारा आणि रडवणारा हा ट्रेक अनुभवायचा असेल तर वरंधाघाटाकडे जायलाच हवे, असे लेखक शेवटी सांगतात.

The writer suggests that one should stand quietly for a while, taking in the Konkan landscape and truly experiencing nature's song. On the return journey, the rain-soaked moments stored in the eyes, the thrill of the narrow path, and the snap of a breaking karvi branch keep coming back to mind.
