About the author
Mangesh Padgaonkar - a much-loved senior Marathi poet, known for his musical, easily-flowing poetry.
Summary
In the first stanza the poet opens the scene. As the children play on the meadow, a gentle shower of Prajakta flowers falls on them, each blossom landing with a soft 'tap tap' sound. At the same time the blowing wind makes a 'bhir bhir' sound, and interestingly the children's song falls naturally into step with both these rhythms, as though nature itself were accompanying them.
In the second stanza the poet paints another beautiful picture of the surroundings. On the meadow and in the shade of the trees, sunlight and shadow come together to give the illusion of weaving a delicate net over the ground. At the same moment a swift breeze begins to blow, and touched by that wind, the blades of grass too seem to sway with delight.
In the third stanza the poet describes the notes of the song. The children's melody spreads far into the distance, seeming to bathe in the golden sunlight. Watching this whole joyous scene, the earth itself seems to break into a smile, and a swing tied to a branch nearby sways gently, as though nature too has joined in the celebration.
In the final two stanzas the poet links the children's song to nature's many forms - sometimes it feels like a gentle breeze, sometimes like a twinkling star in the sky, sometimes like rain, and sometimes like a peacock's feather. In this way the children's song and nature become one and the same. Finally, addressing all children, the poet says they should bloom joyfully like flowers and blend their voices together in song, because those who sing with genuine joy are the truly wise ones, while those who never experience this joy remain foolish.
