Summary

There once lived a wealthy, humble and generous merchant, so devout that no holy man ever left his door disappointed - everyone was fed a full meal. He had performed many yagnas and given away untold wealth in charity to the poor and suffering. But time never stays the same. Suddenly fortune turned, and the merchant had to face poverty. Even his companions turned away, until things reached a point where the merchant and his wife began to starve.

In those days there was a custom: the merit of a yagna could be bought and sold, its price set according to how great the yagna was. When want grew severe, the wife one day said, 'If there's nothing else, sell off one of your yagnas!' Hearing this the merchant was deeply grieved at first, but considering his hardship he agreed to sell one. Ten or twelve kos away from his home lay a town called Kundanpur, home to a very wealthy merchant known as 'Dhanna Seth'. Rumour had it that his wife possessed a divine power that let her know the affairs of all three worlds. The distressed merchant decided to sell his yagna to them.

Somehow the wife borrowed a little flour from a neighbour, made four thick rotis, tied them in a bundle, and gave them to the merchant. He set out very early in the scorching summer heat. On the way, fatigue, sweat and hunger overtook him. Seeing a grove and a well ahead, he decided to stop there to eat and rest. Just as he was about to break a roti, he noticed a dog nearby, writhing weakly, its belly stuck to its spine from hunger, too feeble even to lift its head properly.

The merchant's heart filled with compassion. He broke one roti into pieces and placed it before the dog. Slowly the dog ate the whole thing, some life returning to its body, and it looked at the merchant with gratitude. Thinking one more roti would let it move about, he fed it a second. The dog gained a little strength but still could not walk properly, and no settlement was in sight. He thought, what does it matter to me, eating one roti or two is the same, I'll reach Kundanpur soon anyway - and fed it a third roti. Only one roti remained, and he was about to eat it himself when he saw the dog's eyes still fixed on him with a pitiful plea.

In the evening the merchant reached Dhanna Seth's mansion. Dhanna Seth rose to welcome him and asked, 'Tell me, merchant, what brings you here?' The merchant said, 'I am in distress and have come to sell you a yagna.' Just then Dhanna Seth's wife came, greeted him and said, 'Sethji, we are ready to buy a yagna, but you must sell us your mahayagya (great sacrifice).' 'Mahayagya!' the merchant exclaimed in surprise. The wife said, 'Yes, the one you performed today.' Astonished, thinking he was being mocked, he replied humbly, 'You speak of today, but I haven't performed any yagna in years - my situation hasn't allowed it.'

Dhanna Seth's wife said gravely, 'No, merchant - today you performed a mighty yagna. If you sell that, we will buy it; otherwise not.' The merchant became convinced they had no real intention of buying a yagna and were merely toying with him. Annoyed, he said, 'Sethani ji, stop joking! Let's talk business - I haven't performed a yagna in years, yet you speak of today.' She explained that feeding all four rotis to a starving dog today, going hungry himself, was nothing less than a mahayagya. A yagna performed by squandering wealth for the sake of gaining merit is not a true yagna; an act done with pure, selfless intent is the true yagna, the true mahayagya. Feeling as though the sky had fallen on him, the merchant silently picked up his bundle and walked out of the mansion, unwilling to accept payment for a basic human duty. After spending the night hungry on a rest-house platform in Kundanpur, he reached home the following evening. His wife, who had been sitting with great hopes, trembled with dread on seeing him return empty-handed. The merchant recounted the whole tale from start to finish. Hearing it, all her sorrow melted away and her heart filled with joy: 'Blessed is my husband - he did not abandon dharma even in adversity,' she said, touching the dust of his feet to her forehead, 'Have patience, God will make everything well.'

Night's darkness was spreading. As the wife went to the veranda to light a lamp, she stumbled over something on the way. Steadying herself and lighting the lamp, she saw that near the threshold a stone had risen, with an iron ring set into its middle. Until evening the stone had not budged at all - how had it suddenly lifted now? Bewildered, she called her husband, 'Look, how did this stone come up here?' The merchant too was astonished. Grasping the ring and pulling it, the stone lifted, revealing steps leading downward.

Carefully, the merchant and his wife descended, lamp in hand. After only a few steps, so much light appeared before them that their eyes were dazzled. The merchant saw that it was a vast underground vault, glittering with jewels. The mystery of this divine wonder was beyond their understanding, and both stood speechless. Then, unseen but in a clear voice, they heard: 'O merchant! By staying hungry yourself, and gladly, as your duty, feeding all four rotis to a dying dog and saving its life - this is the reward of that great yagna.' Hearing this divine voice, the merchant and his wife felt utterly fulfilled. Right there they bowed their heads to the ground and paid homage at God's feet.
