काकी Kaki

एक दिन सवेरे श्यामू की नींद खुलती है तो वह देखता है कि घर में सब रो रहे हैं। उसकी काकी उमा ज़मीन पर लेटी है और घर के सब लोग उसे घेरकर दुख से रो रहे हैं। जब लोग उमा को शमशान ले जाने के लिए उठाते हैं, तब श्यामू बहुत हंगामा करता है, हाथों से छूटकर उमा के ऊपर गिर जाता है और कहता है, 'काकी सो रही हैं, उन्हें कहाँ लिए जा रहे हो? मैं नहीं जाने दूँगा।' लोग बड़ी मुश्किल से उसे हटा पाते हैं और उसे अंतिम संस्कार में नहीं जाने देते।

One morning Shyamu wakes early to find the whole house in mourning. His aunt Uma lies on the ground while everyone gathers around, weeping pitifully. When people lift Uma to carry her to the cremation ground, Shyamu creates a great commotion, breaks free and falls upon her body, crying, 'Kaki is sleeping - where are you taking her like this? I won't let you.' With great difficulty, people pull him away and keep him from the cremation.

समझदार बड़े श्यामू को विश्वास दिलाते हैं कि उसकी काकी उसके मामा के घर गई है, पर झूठ ज़्यादा दिन तक छिप नहीं पाता। आस-पास के छोटे बच्चों की बातों से ही यह पता चल जाता है कि काकी कहीं नहीं, ऊपर राम के यहाँ गई है। काकी के लिए कई दिन तक रोते-रोते उसका रोना तो शांत हो जाता है, पर मन का दुख शांत नहीं होता। वह अक्सर अकेला बैठा-बैठा सूने मन से आकाश की ओर देखा करता है।

Wise elders convince Shyamu that his aunt has gone to his maternal uncle's house, but truth cannot stay hidden behind a veil of lies for long. Through the innocent talk of nearby children, it comes out that Kaki has gone nowhere else but to Ram's abode above. After days of weeping, his crying subsides, but the grief does not settle. He often sits alone, staring blankly at the sky with an empty mind.

एक दिन उसने आसमान में पतंग उड़ती देखी। न जाने क्या सोचकर उसका मन एकदम खुश हो गया। विश्वेश्वर (श्यामू के काका, काकी के पति) के पास जाकर वह बोला, 'काका! मुझे एक पतंग मँगा दो।' पत्नी की मौत के बाद विश्वेश्वर हमेशा उदास और गुमसुम रहते थे। वे उदासी से 'अच्छा, मँगा दूँगा' कहकर कहीं और चले गए। श्यामू पतंग के लिए बहुत बेचैन था और अपनी इच्छा किसी तरह रोक नहीं पाया।

One day he saw a kite flying in the sky, and for some reason his heart lit up. Going to Vishveshwar (Shyamu's uncle, Kaki's husband), he said, 'Kaka! Get me a kite.' Since his wife's death, Vishveshwar had remained constantly distracted and lost in thought. He said sadly, 'Alright, I'll get one,' and walked off elsewhere. Shyamu was desperate for the kite and could not restrain his wish.

इधर-उधर देखकर श्यामू ने विश्वेश्वर के खूँटी पर टँगे कोट की जेबें टटोलीं और एक स्टूल खिसकाकर उसमें से एक चवन्नी निकाल ली, फिर तुरंत वहाँ से भाग गया। उसने सुखिया दासी के बेटे भोला (अपने हमउम्र दोस्त) को चवन्नी देकर कहा, 'अपनी जीजी से कहकर चुपके से एक पतंग और डोर मँगा दो, किसी को पता न चले।' अँधेरे कमरे में पतंग में डोर बाँधी जाने लगी। श्यामू ने धीरे से कहा, 'मैं यह पतंग ऊपर राम के यहाँ भेजूँगा। इसे पकड़कर काकी नीचे आ जाएँगी। मुझे लिखना नहीं आता, नहीं तो इस पर उनका नाम लिख देता।'

Looking around cautiously, Shyamu felt through the pockets of Vishveshwar's coat hanging on a peg, dragging a stool over, and 'discovered' a four-anna coin, then fled at once. He gave the coin to Bhola, the son of the maidservant Sukhiya and his own playmate, saying, 'Ask your sister quietly to get a kite and string - don't let anyone find out.' In the dark room, the string began to be tied to the kite. Shyamu said softly, 'I will send this kite up to Ram's abode. Kaki will catch it and climb down. I don't know how to write, or I would have written her name on it.'

भोला श्यामू से ज़्यादा समझदार था। उसने कहा, 'बात तो बहुत अच्छी है, पर एक दिक्क़त है। यह डोर पतली है, इसे पकड़कर काकी नीचे नहीं आ सकतीं, यह टूट सकती है। पतंग में मोटी रस्सी हो तो ठीक होगा।' श्यामू गंभीर हो गया, क्योंकि मोटी रस्सी मँगाने के लिए पास में पैसे नहीं थे और घर के लोग, जिन्होंने काकी को बिना किसी परवाह के जला दिया था, इस काम के लिए कुछ नहीं देंगे। पहले दिन जैसी तरकीब से दूसरे दिन उसने विश्वेश्वर के कोट से एक रुपया निकाला और भोला को देकर कहा, 'अच्छी दो रस्सियाँ मँगा दे। जवाहर भैया से मैं काग़ज़ पर काकी लिखवा रखूँगा, ताकि नाम की चिट रहे और पतंग उन्हीं के पास पहुँच जाए।'

Bhola was more sensible than Shyamu. He said, 'The idea is good, but there's one difficulty. This string is thin - Kaki cannot hold it and climb down, it might snap. If the kite has a thick rope, everything will work.' Shyamu grew serious, for buying a thick rope needed money he did not have, and the family, who had cremated Kaki without any real care, would give nothing for this purpose. Using the same trick as the day before, he took a rupee from Vishveshwar's coat the next day and gave it to Bhola, saying, 'Get two good ropes. I'll have brother Jawahar write Kaki on a paper, so a name-tag stays on it and the kite reaches straight to her.'

दो घंटे बाद ख़ुशी-ख़ुशी श्यामू और भोला अँधेरे कमरे में बैठे पतंग में रस्सी बाँध रहे थे। अचानक उस अच्छे काम में रुकावट की तरह ग़ुस्से में विश्वेश्वर वहाँ आ गए और धमकाकर बोले, 'तुमने हमारे कोट से रुपया निकाला है?' भोला एक ही डाँट में सब बता देता है: 'श्यामू भैया ने रस्सी और पतंग मँगाने के लिए निकाला था।' विश्वेश्वर ने श्यामू को दो थप्पड़ मारकर कहा, 'चोरी सीखकर जेल जाएगा? अच्छा, तुझे आज अच्छी तरह सिखाता हूँ,' और फिर थप्पड़ मारे, कान मरोड़े और पतंग फाड़ दी। फिर रस्सियों की ओर देखकर पूछा, 'ये किसने मँगाईं?' भोला ने कहा, 'इन्होंने मँगाई थीं। कहते थे, इनसे पतंग खींचकर काकी को राम के यहाँ से नीचे लाएँगे।' विश्वेश्वर हैरान होकर वहीं खड़े रह गए। उन्होंने फटी हुई पतंग उठाकर देखी। उस पर चिपके काग़ज़ पर लिखा था - काकी।

Two hours later, Shyamu and Bhola sat happily in the dark room tying the rope to the kite. Suddenly, like an obstacle bursting into their joyful task, Vishveshwar stormed in furiously and demanded, 'Did you take money from our coat?' At a single scolding, Bhola turned informer: 'Shyamu bhaiya took it to get rope and a kite.' Vishveshwar slapped Shyamu twice, saying, 'Learning to steal, will you end up in jail? Fine, today I'll teach you a proper lesson' - and slapped him again, twisted his ear, and tore the kite apart. Then, looking at the ropes, he asked, 'Who asked for these?' Bhola said, 'He did. He said he'd pull the kite taut with these and bring Kaki down from Ram's abode.' Vishveshwar stood there, stunned into silence. He picked up the torn kite and looked at it. On the paper glued to it was written - Kaki.
