गिरिधर की कुंडलियाँ Giridhar Ki Kundaliyan

एक लाठी हमेशा साथ रखने लायक़ चीज़ है, क्योंकि उसमें बहुत गुण छिपे हैं। गहरी जगह, नदी या ख़तरे वाली राह पर वह शरीर की रक्षा करती है, अचानक झपटते कुत्ते को भी वह भगा सकती है, और झगड़ा करने वाले दुश्मन को भी दूर रख सकती है। कवि कहते हैं कि बाक़ी सब हथियार छोड़कर सिर्फ़ एक लाठी हाथ में रख लेनी चाहिए, क्योंकि वही सबसे काम आने वाली और सुलभ चीज़ है।

A stick has great value - always keep one with you. In a deep place, near a river, or on a risky path, it protects the body; it can also drive off a dog that suddenly lunges, and keep a quarrelsome enemy at bay. The poet says: leave aside all other weapons and simply keep a stick in hand, for it is the most useful and easily available protection of all.

थोड़े दाम की मोटी ऊनी कमरी बहुत काम आती है। महँगी मलमल और रेशमी कपड़े अपनी अलग शान-शौक़त के लिए रखे जाते हैं, जो सिर्फ़ ख़ास मौक़ों पर काम आते हैं। पर कमरी को मोट-सी बाँधकर कहीं भी ले जाया जा सकता है और रात को बिछाकर सोया भी जा सकता है। कवि कहते हैं कि यह बहुत कम दाम में मिल जाती है, फिर भी हर दिन साथ रहती है - इसलिए एक साधारण-सी कमरी की मर्यादा बहुत बड़ी है।

A cheap woollen blanket serves many purposes. Fine muslin and silk are kept for show and only prove useful on special occasions. But a blanket can be rolled into a bundle and carried anywhere, and spread out at night to sleep on. The poet says it comes for very little money, yet stays with you every single day - so a simple blanket holds a dignity far greater than its cost.

गुण के क़द्रदान तो हज़ारों लोग मिल जाते हैं, पर बिना गुण के कोई पहचान नहीं पाता कि असली गुण क्या है। जैसे कौआ और कोयल दोनों की आवाज़ सब सुनते हैं, पर कोयल की आवाज़ सबको मीठी और सुहावनी लगती है, जबकि रंग में एक जैसे दिखने पर भी कौआ सबको अशुभ लगता है। कवि कहते हैं कि हे मन के मालिक, सुनो: बिना गुण के कोई क़द्र नहीं पाता, भले ही गुण के क़द्रदान हज़ारों क्यों न हों।

Thousands of people claim to appreciate quality, yet without quality itself, no one can truly recognise it. Just as everyone hears both the crow's and the cuckoo's call, the cuckoo's voice is found sweet and pleasing by all, while the crow - though similar in colour - is considered ill-omened by everyone. The poet says: listen, O master of the mind, without genuine merit no one earns true regard, however many thousands may claim to prize it.

हे मालिक, इस पूरे संसार में सब कुछ स्वार्थ के लेन-देन पर चलता है। जब तक जेब में पैसा रहता है, तब तक ही दोस्त साथ रहते हैं। जब तक पैसा रहता है, दोस्त साथ-साथ घूमते हैं, पर जैसे ही पैसा ख़त्म हो जाए, वही दोस्त मुँह तक नहीं लगाते। कवि कहते हैं कि भाई, दुनिया का यही हिसाब है - बिना किसी स्वार्थ के प्रेम करने वाला सच्चा दोस्त कोई-कोई ही मिलता है।

O friend, the whole world runs on self-interested dealings. As long as there is money in your pocket, that long you have friends. As long as the money lasts, friends stay by your side, but the moment it runs out, those same friends won't even speak to you. The poet says: brother, this is the world's true reckoning - a friend who loves without any selfish motive is exceedingly rare.

दिन जैसे-तैसे काटकर धूप में सो लेना बेहतर है, पर पतले, कमज़ोर पत्तों वाले पेड़ की छाया में बैठकर भरोसा नहीं करना चाहिए। ऐसा कमज़ोर पेड़ किसी न किसी दिन धोखा दे ही देगा - जिस दिन तेज़ हवा चलेगी, वह जड़ से उखड़कर गिर जाएगा। कवि कहते हैं कि हमेशा किसी मज़बूत, घने पेड़ की छाया ही चुननी चाहिए - भले ही उसके सारे पत्ते झड़ जाएँ, फिर भी उसकी छाया में ही रहना चाहिए, क्योंकि उसकी जड़ें मज़बूत होती हैं।

It is better to somehow get through the day sleeping in the sun than to sit trusting the shade of a tree with thin, weak leaves. Such a weak tree will betray you sooner or later - the day a strong wind blows, it will snap at the root and fall. The poet says: always choose the shade of a sturdy, thick tree - even if all its leaves fall, still stay in its shade, for its roots run deep and strong.

जैसे नाव में पानी भर आए तो दोनों हाथों से उसे बाहर उलीचना ही समझदारी है, वैसे ही घर में जब धन-दौलत बढ़ जाए तो भी सँभलकर, सावधानी से काम लेना समझदारी है। सबसे बुद्धिमानी की बात यही है कि राम का स्मरण करते रहें, और दूसरों की भलाई के काम के लिए ख़ुद को आगे रखें (अपना त्याग करने में संकोच न करें)। कवि कहते हैं कि यही बड़े-बुज़ुर्गों की सीख है - हमेशा अच्छा आचरण अपनाकर चलें और अपनी इज़्ज़त (मान-मर्यादा) बचाकर रखें।

Just as bailing out water from a boat with both hands is the wise thing to do when it fills up, so too, when wealth increases at home, handling it with care and caution is wisdom. The wisest course of all is to keep remembering God, and to put oneself forward for the sake of others' good without hesitation. The poet says this is the teaching of one's elders - always walk a path of good conduct, and guard one's own honour and dignity.

राजा के दरबार में हमेशा उचित समय देखकर ही जाना चाहिए। हे मालिक, ऐसी जगह कभी मत बैठिए जहाँ से कोई आपको उठा दे। जहाँ कोई उठाने को कहे, वहाँ चुपचाप, बिना कुछ बोले उठ जाइए। ज़ोर से हँसना नहीं चाहिए, और जब पूछा जाए तभी बात कहनी चाहिए। कवि कहते हैं कि हर काम सही समय देखकर करना चाहिए, बहुत जल्दबाज़ी नहीं करनी चाहिए, वरना राजा फिर से नाराज़ हो सकते हैं।

One should always go to a king's court only at the right time. O friend, never sit in a place from which someone might have to ask you to move. Where someone asks you to get up, rise quietly without a word. One should not laugh loudly, and should speak only when asked. The poet says every task should be done at its proper time, without excessive haste - otherwise the king may again grow displeased.
