बात अठन्नी की Baat Athanni Ki

रसीला इंजीनियर बाबू जगतसिंह का नौकर है, जिसे दस रुपए महीने की तनख़्वाह मिलती है। गाँव में उसके बूढ़े पिता, पत्नी और तीन बच्चे हैं, जिनका सारा खर्च उसी को उठाना पड़ता है। वह अपनी पूरी तनख़्वाह घर भेज देता है, फिर भी घर का गुज़ारा नहीं हो पाता। जब भी वह तनख़्वाह बढ़ाने को कहता है, इंजीनियर साहब यही कहते हैं कि जिसे ज़्यादा चाहिए वह कहीं और चला जाए।

Rasila is a servant of engineer Jagatsingh, earning ten rupees a month. In his village live his old father, wife and three children, whose entire burden rests on him alone. He sends his whole salary home, yet the family still cannot make ends meet. Whenever he asks for a raise, the engineer only says that anyone wanting more can simply leave.

पड़ोस में रहने वाले ज़िला मजिस्ट्रेट के चौकीदार मियाँ रमज़ान से रसीला की गहरी दोस्ती है। शेख साहब को फल पसंद हैं तो इंजीनियर साहब को मिठाई, और दोनों नौकर आपस में यही चीज़ें बाँट लेते हैं। एक दिन रमज़ान रसीला को उदास देखकर वजह पूछता है। रसीला बताता है कि घर से ख़त आया है, बच्चे बीमार हैं और पास में पैसा नहीं है। रमज़ान बिना कुछ जताए अपनी जेब से कुछ रुपए निकालकर उसे दे देता है।

Rasila shares a close friendship with Mian Ramzan, the watchman of the neighbouring District Magistrate Sheikh Salimuddin. Sheikh Sahib loves fruit and the engineer loves sweets, and the two servants happily share these small gifts between themselves. One day Ramzan finds Rasila looking sad and asks why. Rasila explains that a letter has come from home, the children are ill, and there is no money. Without any show of obligation, Ramzan takes out some rupees from his pocket and places them in Rasila's palm.

एक दिन इंजीनियर साहब किसी से बात कर रहे थे और रसीला ने सुन लिया कि वे पाँच सौ रुपए की रिश्वत को छोटी-सी रकम बता रहे हैं और उसे मुफ़्त में काम करने का एहसान बता रहे हैं। रसीला समझ जाता है कि यह रिश्वत है। तभी इंजीनियर साहब उसे पाँच रुपए की मिठाई लाने भेजते हैं। रसीला साढ़े चार रुपए की ही मिठाई ख़रीदता है और बची हुई अठन्नी अपने पास रख लेता है, यह सोचकर कि रमज़ान का उधार चुक गया।

One day Rasila overhears the engineer calling a five-hundred-rupee bribe 'just five hundred', calling it a favour for doing someone's work for free. Rasila understands this is a bribe. Just then the engineer sends him to buy five rupees' worth of sweets. Rasila buys only four-and-a-half rupees' worth and keeps the remaining eight annas (athanni) for himself, thinking this settles his debt to Ramzan.

इंजीनियर साहब मिठाई देखकर चौंक जाते हैं क्योंकि दुकानदार ने उसकी क़ीमत पाँच रुपए बताई थी। पूछताछ में सच्चाई खुल जाती है और इंजीनियर साहब बहुत गुस्सा हो जाते हैं। वे रसीला को बुरी तरह पीटते हैं, फिर घसीटते हुए पुलिस थाने ले जाते हैं। जाते समय वे सिपाही के हाथ में पाँच रुपए का नोट पकड़ाकर कहते हैं, 'इससे मनवा लेना, ऐसे लोग समझाने से नहीं मानते।'

The engineer is startled to see the sweets, since the shopkeeper had quoted five rupees. Questioning reveals the truth, and the engineer's rage knows no bounds. He beats Rasila mercilessly, then drags him to the police station. On the way, he presses a five-rupee note into the constable's hand, saying, 'Make him confess with this - brutes like him won't listen to reason.'

दूसरे दिन मुक़दमा शेख सलीमुद्दीन की अदालत में पेश होता है। रसीला बिना कोई बहाना बनाए तुरंत अपनी ग़लती मान लेता है, हालाँकि चाहता तो साज़िश की बात बना सकता था। न्याय पसंद शेख साहब उसे छह महीने की सज़ा सुना देते हैं और उसी रूमाल से मुँह पोंछते हैं जिसमें एक दिन पहले किसी ने हज़ार रुपए बाँधकर उन्हें दिए थे।

The next day the case comes up in Sheikh Salimuddin's court. Without any excuse, Rasila immediately admits his guilt, though he could have claimed a conspiracy. The justice-loving Sheikh Sahib sentences him to six months in jail, and wipes his mouth with the very handkerchief in which someone had tied and gifted him a thousand rupees the day before.

फ़ैसला सुनकर रमज़ान को बहुत ग़ुस्सा आता है। वह सोचता है कि यह दुनिया इंसाफ़ की नहीं, अंधेरगर्दी की है: चोरी पकड़ी गई तो सज़ा मिल गई, पर असली चोर बड़े-बड़े घरों में बैठे पैसा बटोर रहे हैं और उन्हें कोई नहीं पकड़ता। घर पहुँचने पर एक दासी के 'अच्छा हुआ, वह इसी लायक़ था' कहने पर रमज़ान गुस्से से कहता है, 'यह इंसाफ़ नहीं अंधेर है, सिर्फ़ एक अठन्नी की ही तो बात थी!' कहानी इसी कड़वी सच्चाई पर ख़त्म होती है: रात में जब हज़ार-पाँच सौ के चोर नरम बिस्तरों पर चैन की नींद सो रहे थे, अठन्नी का चोर जेल की तंग, अँधेरी कोठरी में पछता रहा था।

Hearing the verdict, Ramzan's eyes flash with rage. He reflects that this world is not a city of justice but a city of darkness (Andher Nagri): when a theft is caught it becomes a crime, yet the real culprits sit in their mansions gathering wealth with both hands, untouched by anyone. Back home, when a maidservant remarks 'good, he deserved it', Ramzan retorts angrily, 'this is not justice but injustice - it was only a matter of one athanni!' The story ends on this very irony: that night, while the thieves of a thousand and five hundred rupees slept sweetly on soft beds, the 'thief' of an athanni sat repenting in a cramped, dark jail cell.
