Summary
Work is measured as the product of force and displacement in the direction of force. At this level, W = F s is used when force and displacement are in the same direction.
Lifting a book does positive work against gravity. Gravity does negative work during upward motion. A coolie walking horizontally with a load on the head does zero work on the load by the upward supporting force.
Class 10 ICSE commonly uses kinetic energy, gravitational potential energy, and the law of conservation of energy in direct numerical and reasoning questions.
The SI unit of power is watt. Larger practical units include kilowatt, and commercial electrical energy is measured in kilowatt-hour.
A kilowatt-hour is not a unit of power; it is energy. This is a frequent ICSE trap.
