Summary
A prism splits white light because different colours refract by different amounts. Violet deviates most and red deviates least.
Visible light is only a small part of a larger spectrum including radio waves, infrared, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays.
The colour seen depends on what wavelengths are transmitted, reflected or scattered. The blue sky and reddish sunset are scattering effects.
