Summary
Radioactivity is spontaneous emission from unstable nuclei. Alpha, beta and gamma radiations differ in charge, mass, penetrating power and ionising power.
Half-life is the time taken for activity or number of undecayed nuclei to become half. Radioactive sources need shielding, distance and limited exposure time.
Fission splits a heavy nucleus and can run a reactor chain reaction. Fusion combines light nuclei and powers stars, but needs very high temperature.
Hard words & meanings
| alpha particle | Helium nucleus, high ionising and low penetrating power |
| beta particle | Fast electron from nucleus |
| gamma ray | High energy electromagnetic radiation |
| half-life | Time for activity to fall to half |
