Summary

Radioactivity is spontaneous emission from unstable nuclei. Alpha, beta and gamma radiations differ in charge, mass, penetrating power and ionising power.

Half-life is the time taken for activity or number of undecayed nuclei to become half. Radioactive sources need shielding, distance and limited exposure time.

Fission splits a heavy nucleus and can run a reactor chain reaction. Fusion combines light nuclei and powers stars, but needs very high temperature.

Hard words & meanings

alpha particleHelium nucleus, high ionising and low penetrating power
beta particleFast electron from nucleus
gamma rayHigh energy electromagnetic radiation
half-lifeTime for activity to fall to half
