Summary

Ramanna mentions India once had about a lakh varieties of rice, launching an argument between Roxie and Estu about whether a lakh is genuinely a huge number or a surprisingly ordinary one. Roxie argues it's enormous: a lakh seconds is over 27 hours, and a lakh rupees would take years to save from an average allowance. Estu argues the opposite: a large cricket stadium can hold more than a lakh spectators, and a single human head easily has more than a lakh hairs. Both are completely correct -- a lakh (1,00,000, the same as 100 thousand) is neither objectively big nor small; it only feels large or small depending on what it's actually counting.

Imagine a calculator called Thoughtful Thousands that only has a +1000 button, and figure out how many presses build a target number: reaching 53,000 needs exactly 53 presses. A second calculator, Tedious Tens, only has +10, needing 10 times as many presses for the same number. A third, Creative Chitti, has every power-of-ten button at once (+1, +10, +100, +1000...) and can reach any target in many different combinations of presses. The genuinely elegant discovery is what happens when the FEWEST possible total button presses are used across all of Chitti's buttons at once: building 5072 with the least effort takes exactly 5 presses of +1000, 0 of +100, 7 of +10, and 2 of +1 -- and 5, 0, 7, 2 are exactly the digits of 5072, in exactly that order. Place value notation is really just a record of the minimum-effort way to build a number this way.

Beyond the lakh sits the crore, 1,00,00,000, exactly 100 lakh or 10 million. The Indian place value system groups digits in commas as 3,2,2,2 counting from the right (thousand, then lakh, then crore, each new group only two digits wide), while the International system groups every group as 3 digits (thousand, million, billion). The exact same quantity, 40,506,78 written the Indian way becomes 40,50,678, comes from Sanskrit roots -- lakṣha (लक्ष) and koṭi (कोटि) -- and this same lakh/crore system is shared, not unique to India, used across Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Maldives, Afghanistan, and Myanmar as well.

Not every situation calls for an exact number: a census count like 76,068 people is often reported as 'about 75,000' for everyday conversation, rounding to whichever nearby landmark number (nearest thousand, ten-thousand, or lakh) makes the figure easier to hold in mind without losing its real meaning. Real Indian city population data across the 2001 and 2011 census makes this concrete: comparing a smaller city's population to a much larger one (like Patna's to Mumbai's) shows that scaling up by a specific multiplying factor, found by simple division, reveals exactly how many 'Patnas' would fit inside one 'Mumbai'.

Roxie evaluates 116 x 5 by rewriting 5 as 10/2: 116 x 5 = 116 x 10/2 = 1160/2 = 580, trading a slightly awkward multiplication for an easy one. Estu does the same trick with 25, rewritten as 100/4: 824 x 25 = 824 x 100/4 = 82400/4 = 20600. Beyond individual shortcuts, a genuine pattern governs how many digits any product will have: multiplying two numbers together, the result's digit count is always either the sum of the two numbers' own digit counts, or exactly one less than that sum -- never anything else, a fact worth testing directly with a handful of examples before trusting it.

Imagining Mumbai's roughly 1.2 crore residents each riding a single bus (with typical capacity), or imagining walking the real distance between Earth and the Moon at ordinary walking speed for ten straight years, or calculating exactly how many years it would take to walk all the way to the Sun, turns abstract huge numbers into something almost, but not quite, graspable -- these thought experiments make clear that some real distances and quantities are simply too large for direct human experience, no matter how the numbers are dressed up.
