Summary

A point marks a single location, drawn as a dot and named with a capital letter -- the tip of a compass, the sharpened end of a pencil, and the point of a needle all model this same idea. Joining two points by the shortest possible route gives a line segment, and stretching that same segment infinitely in both directions gives a line -- while stretching it infinitely in just ONE direction gives a ray, modelled by a lighthouse beam, a torch's light, or the sun's rays, which start at a point and travel onward without ever stopping.

Watching Vidya open her book cover reveals what an angle actually is: with the cover barely lifted, the angle between the two covers is tiny; opened halfway, the angle is bigger; opened all the way flat, the angle has become a full straight line. Two rays sharing one starting point (the vertex) form an angle, and the angle's size is simply the amount of rotation needed to turn one ray onto the other -- not a fixed shape, but a measure of how much turning happened.

Two cranes arguing over who opens their beak wider settles the question without any measuring tool at all: tracing one angle onto a transparent sheet and sliding that same tracing over to the second angle shows immediately which one is bigger, since the ray that sticks out further past the other reveals the larger angle -- and, importantly, making the arms of an angle longer or shorter never changes its size at all, only where the rays happen to end.

A straight angle (180 degrees) is exactly what Vidya's book becomes when it lies completely flat -- and folding a straight angle exactly in half, so its two arms line up perfectly on top of each other, creates a right angle (90 degrees) at the crease. Two lines meeting at a right angle are called perpendicular -- and there's a small joke that captures this perfectly: why shouldn't you argue with a 90 degree angle? Because it's always right.

A full turn is divided into exactly 360 equal parts called degrees -- and this specific number has genuine, deep history: the Rigveda itself describes a wheel with 360 spokes (Verse 1.164.48), and ancient India, Persia, Babylonia, and Egypt all independently used 360-day calendars, with the Babylonians counting in a base-60 (sexagesimal) system that meshes naturally with 360. Mathematically, 360 is also the smallest number that divides evenly by every one of 1 through 10, except for 7 alone -- a genuinely convenient property for splitting a circle into many different equal parts.

Folding a paper circle exactly in half gives a semicircle worth 180 degrees (half of a full 360 degree turn); folding that in half again gives a quarter circle worth 90 degrees; one more fold gives an eighth of the circle, worth 45 degrees; and folding once more still gives a sixteenth of the circle, worth 22.5 degrees -- each fold precisely halving both the paper and the angle it represents, building a working protractor entirely from careful, repeated folding.

Every possible angle falls into exactly one of four named ranges: acute (bigger than 0 but smaller than 90 degrees), obtuse (bigger than 90 but smaller than 180 degrees), straight (exactly 180 degrees), or reflex (bigger than 180 but smaller than 360 degrees) -- with 'acute' meaning sharp and 'obtuse' meaning blunt, names chosen to match exactly how narrow or wide-open each type of angle actually looks.
