Summary
An algebraic expression combines numbers, variables and operations. The parts joined by plus or minus signs are terms. In 5x - 7, the terms are 5x and -7.
A polynomial in one variable uses non-negative whole number powers of that variable. The degree is the highest power of the variable with a non-zero coefficient.
A linear polynomial has degree 1. It can be written as ax + b, where a is not zero. Examples are 3x + 2 and 10 - 4y.
In a linear pattern, equal increases in input give equal increases or decreases in output. This constant difference is the clue that the relationship is linear.
If the output rises at a steady rate, it is linear growth. If it falls at a steady rate, it is linear decay. In y = ax + b, the number a controls the slope.
The graph of y = ax + b is a straight line. The number b is the y-intercept, the point where the line cuts the y-axis. Lines with the same slope are parallel.
