Summary
Edmond Dantès, a promising young sailor, is falsely accused by jealous rivals and imprisoned without a fair trial in the Château d'If, a fortress on an island near Marseille.
Central idea
Like Dantès patiently digging toward the light, reading a great novel means moving slowly through the dark until meaning appears. Lire ce roman, c'est comme creuser un tunnel : on avance lentement vers la liberté du sens.
