'ಮ್ಯಾಂವ್' ಎಂದವರ್ಯಾರು?

ಒಂದು ನಾಯಿಮರಿ 'ಮ್ಯಾಂವ್' ಎಂಬ ಸದ್ದು ಕೇಳಿ, ಯಾರು ಹೇಳಿದರು ಎಂದು ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಾ ಹುಂಜ, ಕಪ್ಪೆ, ಹಸುವಿನ ಬಳಿ ಕೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ತಮ್ಮದೇ ಸದ್ದು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ, 'ಮ್ಯಾಂವ್' ಎಂದವರು ಯಾರೆಂದು ಮಕ್ಕಳೇ ಊಹಿಸಬೇಕು.

ಮಂಚದ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಮಲಗಿದ್ದ ನಾಯಿಮರಿಗೆ 'ಮ್ಯಾಂವ್' ಎಂಬ ಸದ್ದು ಕೇಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಯಾರು ಹೇಳಿದರು ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಯಲು ಅದು ಹುಂಜ, ಕಪ್ಪೆ, ಹಸುವಿನ ಬಳಿ ಹೋಗಿ ಕೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದೂ ತನ್ನದೇ ಆದ ಸದ್ದು ('ಕೊಕ್ಕೊಕ್ಕೋ', 'ವಟರ್ ವಟರ್', 'ಅಂಬಾ') ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆಯೇ ಹೊರತು 'ಮ್ಯಾಂವ್' ಎನ್ನುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಮಂಚದ ಬಳಿ 'ಮ್ಯಾಂವ್' ಎಂಬ ಸದ್ದು ಕೇಳಿಸಿದಾಗ, ನಿಜವಾಗಿ ಯಾರು ಹೇಳಿದರು ಎಂದು ಮಕ್ಕಳೇ ಊಹಿಸಿ ಹೇಳಬೇಕೆಂದು ಕಥೆ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಕೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

A puppy sleeping under a cot hears a sound - 'myaanv'. To find out who made it, it goes and asks a rooster, a frog and a cow one by one. Each of them only makes its own sound ('cock-a-doodle-doo', 'croak croak', 'moo') - none of them says 'myaanv'. When the sound is heard again near the cot, the story asks children to guess for themselves who really said 'myaanv' (a cat, of course) - a fun animal-sound guessing game.

ಒಂದು ನಾಯಿಮರಿ ಮಂಚದ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಮಲಗಿ ನಿದ್ದೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಆಗ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ 'ಮ್ಯಾಂವ್' ಎಂಬ ಸದ್ದು ಕೇಳಿಸಿತು. ನಾಯಿಮರಿ ಥಟ್ಟನೆ ಎದ್ದು ಆಚೀಚೆ ನೋಡಿತು. ಸದ್ದು ಎಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಬಂತೆಂದು ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಡೆಯೂ ಹುಡುಕಿತು; ಟ್ರಂಕಿನ ಮೇಲೆ, ಹೊದಿಕೆಯ ಕೆಳಗೆ, ಮಡಕೆಯ ಹಿಂದೆ ನೋಡಿತು. ಆದರೆ ಎಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಯಾರೂ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದು ಮನೆಯ ಹೊರಗೆ ಬಂತು.

A puppy was sleeping under a cot in the afternoon. Suddenly it heard a sound - 'myaanv'. The puppy jumped up at once and looked all around. It searched everywhere to find where the sound came from - on the trunk, under the blanket, behind the pot - but found no one anywhere. So it went outside the house.

ಮನೆಯ ಹೊರಗೆ ಒಂದು ಹುಂಜ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತು. ನಾಯಿಮರಿ 'ನೀನು ಮ್ಯಾಂವ್ ಎಂದು ಕೂಗಿದೆಯಾ?' ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿತು. ಹುಂಜ 'ಕೊಕ್ಕೊಕ್ಕೋ' ಎಂದಿತು. ಮುಂದೆ ಹೋದಾಗ ಕೆರೆಯ ದಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಕಪ್ಪೆ ಕುಳಿತಿತ್ತು; ಅದನ್ನೂ ಕೇಳಿತು. ಕಪ್ಪೆ 'ವಟರ್ ವಟರ್' ಎಂದು ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ ಹೇಳಿ ನೀರಿಗೆ ಜಿಗಿದು ಮಾಯವಾಯಿತು.

ಮನೆಯ ಹೊರಗೆ ಬಂದಾಗ ಒಂದು ಹುಂಜ ಎದುರಾಯಿತು. ನಾಯಿಮರಿ 'ನೀನು ಮ್ಯಾಂವ್ ಎಂದು ಕೂಗಿದೆಯಾ?' ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿತು. ಹುಂಜ 'ಕೊಕ್ಕೊಕ್ಕೋ' ಎಂದಿತು. 'ನಿನಗೆ ಬೇರೆ ಏನೂ ಕೂಗಲು ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲವೇ?' ಎಂದು ಮತ್ತೆ ಕೇಳಿದಾಗಲೂ ಹುಂಜ 'ಕೊಕ್ಕೊಕ್ಕೋ' ಎಂದಷ್ಟೇ ಹೇಳಿತು. ನಾಯಿಮರಿ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಮುಂದೆ ನಡೆದಾಗ, ಕೆರೆಯ ದಡದ ಮೇಲೆ ಒಂದು ಕಪ್ಪೆ ಕುಳಿತಿತ್ತು. ಅದನ್ನೂ 'ನೀನು ಮ್ಯಾಂವ್ ಎಂದು ಕೂಗಿದೆಯಾ?' ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿತು. ಕಪ್ಪೆ 'ವಟರ್ ವಟರ್' ಎಂದಿತು. ಮತ್ತೆ ಕೇಳಿದಾಗಲೂ 'ವಟರ್ ವಟರ್' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿ, ಥಟ್ಟನೆ ನೀರಿಗೆ ಜಿಗಿದು ಮಾಯವಾಯಿತು.

Just outside the house, the puppy met a rooster and asked, 'Did you say myaanv?' The rooster said 'cock-a-doodle-doo'. When asked again if it could make any other sound, the rooster only repeated the same call. Walking a little further, the puppy found a frog sitting on the edge of a pond and asked it the same question. The frog said 'croak croak' - and when asked again, it said the same and jumped straight into the water, disappearing from sight.

ನಾಯಿಮರಿ ಯೋಚಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಮನೆ ಕಡೆಗೆ ಬಂತು. ಕೊಟ್ಟಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಹಸುವನ್ನೂ ಕೇಳಿತು. ಹಸು 'ಅಂಬಾ ಅಂಬಾ' ಎಂದಿತು. 'ಮ್ಯಾಂವ್' ಎಂದವರು ಯಾರೆಂದು ನಾಯಿಮರಿಗೆ ಇನ್ನೂ ಗೊತ್ತಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಮಂಚದ ಬಳಿ ಮತ್ತೆ 'ಮ್ಯಾಂವ್' ಎಂಬ ಸದ್ದು ಕೇಳಿಸಿತು - ನಿಜವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿದವರು ಯಾರು ಎಂದು ನೀವೇ ಹೇಳಬೇಕು!

ನಾಯಿಮರಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಆಲೋಚಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಮನೆ ಕಡೆಗೆ ಬಂತು. ಕೊಟ್ಟಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಹಸುವಿಗೆ, 'ನೀನು ಮ್ಯಾಂವ್ ಎಂದು ಕೂಗಿದೆಯಾ?' ಎಂದಿತು. ಹಸು 'ಅಂಬಾ.. ಅಂಬಾ..' ಎಂದಿತು. 'ಅಯ್ಯೋ, ಹಸುವೂ ಅಂಬಾ ಅನ್ನುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಯಾರು ಮ್ಯಾಂವ್ ಎಂದವರು?' ಎಂದು ಯೋಚಿಸುತ್ತಾ ನಾಯಿಮರಿ ಮಂಚದ ಕೆಳಗೆ ನುಗ್ಗುವಾಗ ಮತ್ತೆ 'ಮ್ಯಾಂವ್' ಎಂದು ಸದ್ದಾಯಿತು. ಈಗ ಆ ಸದ್ದನ್ನು ನಿಜವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿದವರು ಯಾರೆಂದು ಮಕ್ಕಳೇ ಊಹಿಸಬೇಕು - ಇದು ಬೆಕ್ಕಿನ ಸದ್ದು ಎಂದು ಕಥೆ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನೇ ಕೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

Thinking hard, the puppy came back towards the house and asked the cow in the shed too. The cow said 'moo moo'. The puppy still did not know who had said 'myaanv'. Just as it crept back under the cot, the sound 'myaanv' was heard again - and now it is left to the children themselves to guess who really made that sound (it is, of course, a cat).
